"Look, I can't use the laser and I haven't got the drugs to combat infection - there's no Medicom back-up! I don't want to operate because she's virtually no chance of surviving the shock. " - Piers Gilpin
Sara records a message for Bob, telling him that although the ship is now on the move, they are still not clear of the cloud. The CO2 levels are getting worse, Victoria is really ill, and Rosie and the Captain are still trapped in the lift. She can't see how they can survive out there for much longer.
Finbow tries to contact Rosie and Eliot to tell them that James is out working on the hydraulic mechanism. Mercedes, however, thinks the computer operating system is jammed. Outside, James can see no damage. Finbow orders him back in.
In Medicom, Victoria is sick. Piers and Sara tell her that she must drink something, but she is sick again.
There is still no change in visibility. With James back in, Finbow orders Petra to reactivate the lift system. It works. Chantal and Finbow greet Rosie and Eliot. Finbow updates Eliot on the situation, but he doesn't want to know. Rosie returns to Medicom, where Victoria's condition is worsening. Medicom is still not working.
Finbow and James join Eliot in the Club and ask him to resume command, but he refuses. He will not take responsibility for a course that he has not set, and states that whatever happens, it is all down to Finbow.
In the common room, the students gossip about what happened between Rosie and Eliot in the lift. Herlinde decides to use her remaining hours to seduce Piers. She goes to Medicom, where Piers persuades her to help him treat Victoria.
Anna asks Timmy to keep her company. She tells him that he saved them all, and now she wants him to help her.
Piers examines Victoria and she is sick again. Without Medicom all he can do is give Victoria wide-spectrum anti-bacterials. Without them she will get toxemia from the infection. Herlinde is worried.
Chantal and Piers join Eliot in the bar where they discuss Victoria. Piers doesn't fancy her chances if he had to operate. Eliot asks, given their present situation, whether is it worth putting her through any unnecessary suffering?
Timmy prepares chocolate brownies for Anna, who is growing hysterical. She tells Timmy that she doesn't want to die without seeing her new-born baby sister.
Rosie runs into Eliot and tells him that he is acting irresponsibly by not retaking command. She adds that she wouldn't get into a lift with him again for a million ecu's.
Finbow tells Mercedes that Eliot told Daedalus Commission he was unstable, and so he was turned down. As Mercedes falls asleep, he summises that none of them will make Daedalus now.
Rosie returns to Medicom. Piers tells her that Victoria is going into shock, and that there is nothing he can do without Medicom. She says that he has to try, but he tells her that there is no point.
In a darkened Dome, Chantal tells James that she must of made a mistake as the situation seems no better. She wonders what they will do if they get out of this. She was going back to Earth to teach, whilst James was going on Daedalus. He tells her that he only volunteered when his girlfriend returned to Earth and found another partner. She says that if he was her boyfriend, she wouldn't do that to him. He asks her if that is an offer, but she has fallen asleep on his shoulder.
Eliot dozes in the Club, whilst on the bridge, a sleeping Finbow and Mercedes fail to see a flashing light on the screen.
Piers, assisted by Rosie and Herlinde, prepares to operate on Victoria.
Petra wakes Finbow by informing him that the external field strength is beginning to decay. Visibilty is clearing.
Piers makes the first incision.
Petra has visually identified the disc of Jupiter. Mercedes and Finbow hug - they are out of the plasma ball. Chantal awakes to see Jupiter ascending above the Dome. She wakes James, and they share a lingering kiss.
