"Do you wonder that I'm feeling a tiny bit frustrated? Are you astonished that I want to strangle Harriet Bullock?" - Charles Brelan
During a seminar, Melody gives a presentation on chaos theory. Harriet suggests that if Melody must copy her essays from text books, she should copy them from up to date ones. Chaos theory has been discounted for years.
Daniel and Victoria are playing poker again in the common room. After she wins another hand, Piers jokingly suggests that Victoria take him out on her winnings. She warns him that she might take him up on the offer, while Daniel tries to squirm out of paying the 180 ecus that Victoria has won. Sara wonders if some small random event has upset Daniel's playing, but he thinks that chaos theory is plausible. He demonstrates by thrusting his apple into Melody's hand and suggests that this could set off a series of events that could culminate in her falling for him. Melody storms out, and slams the apple into a nearby flower pot.
In Medicom, Timmy tells Rosie that his thoat hurts. She tells him not to speak. Piers examines Timmy further, and finds his chest is covered in blotches. Medicom has diagnosed an allergy, but Piers cannot tell him what he is allergic to.
In the common room, Sara works out how much Victoria can buy with her winnings. Victoria gives Daniel the chance to quit, but he wants to win his money back.
Harriet makes her way through the lobby, and finds the apple in the plant pot. She angrily enters the common room, whilst Daniel is offering Victoria double or quits on a 1000 ecu bet, and tells the students they should be at lectures. They play their last hand, and Daniel loses again. Harriet says it is a pity he didn't go to his lecture, and returns his apple.
In the Stardust, Jean-Francois tells Lili that he must go to the Ilea as Melody needs him, but Melody calls him from Medicom, and tells him that she is coming down on the next shuttle. Rosie has arranged for Melody to stay at the hostel whilst Timmy is in Space City for tests. Harriet arrives and tells Melody that she cannot afford to miss lectures, and forbids her to go. Piers and Melody leave, and Harriet tells an angry Rosie that Melody's attitude is symptomatic of the whole college. She mentions the card game, and now Rosie is encouraging Melody to go on a jaunt. She has to draw the line somewhere. Rosie tells her that she is drawing a line too. She is owed a weeks leave, and will go down with Timmy herself.
Melody tells Timmy that she and Jean-Francois will visit him. Rosie arrives and they board the lift. As the shuttle leaves, Melody contacts Jean-Francois to tell him she is stuck on board the Ilea.
In her cabin, Harriet dictates a memo stating she is changing the regulations governing attendance, attainment, and the use of college amenities.
Daniel reads the memo to Sara. Failure to attend lectures will now result in the loss of degree credits, and late arrivals will not be admitted or credited. He tells Sara that a protest is called for, and invites her to Space City for the night. She tells him he should give the 2000 ecus he owes to Victoria. He tells her he is going down anyway, and leaves.
In the Stardust, Lili flirts with an emabarrassed Brelan. Rosie arrives in the cafe, and the Professor buys her a drink. He tells her that he does not want to be cast as the villain, but he is frustrated, especially by Harriet. She is surprised they have so much in common, but she is still on Harriet's side. Jean-Francois interrupts them, on his way to the Ilea. Rosie tells him not to antagonise Harriet, and that Timmy is doing fine. After Jean-Francois leaves, Lili offers Brelan stuffed carp for dinner, and he invites Rosie to dine with him, much to Lili's annoyance.
Jean-Francois surprises Melody on the Ilea. He thanks Victoria and Sara for letting him stay, but Harriet arrives and tells him he must leave at once, as the Ilea is not a doss house. Melody thinks that she is picking on her, and threatens to go with him. She drags him off.
Rosie is telling Brelan that she thinks he will get his way over the Ilea in the end, but he says that "in the end" is too late. Until the sky mining programme is resumed, his whole project is at a standstill. Pegeleg arrives in the cafe, and tells Brelan that something odd has shown up on a radar scan of Amalthea. He is needed to look at a direct telemetry link from Valhalla straight away. Rosie leaves with them.
Melody and Jean-Francois have settled down to spend an intimate night in the Dome.
Pegleg takes the call from Valhalla. Brelan is told that Amalthea was only caught in a routine scan of Ganymede by accident, but there is something metallic showing in orbit. After seeing the scan, Brelan gives orders to secure the information. Pegleg tells him that they cannot do another scan for four days, and the Professor asks Rosie if she can keep quiet about it until then. She tells him that she wouldn't even know what to say if she wanted to. Brelan tells her that he cannot afford any rumours until it is confirmed, true or false, but in four days time they might be in a position to astonish the world.
