"Nobody's supposed to use the lifts when the rockets are being fired. There are parts of this ship that are over thirty years old - it isn't safe." - Rosemary Greenwood

Eliot orders a back-up firing sequence for the lower stage rockets.

Sara, worried that Victoria has gone walkabout during acceleration stations, contacts Rosie. Victoria is in the Dome observing the storm.

Rosie tells Eliot about Victoria, but he stands everybody down as they are not going anywhere due to a fault in the power circuits. Finbow believes that something electronic is eating through their shields. Eliot orders him to find Hartman.

Daniel is having trouble with the lobby vending machine when Rosie arrives. He complains and Rosie tries to fix it while he goes for a shower. She asks a passing Finbow if he can get the computer engineer to look at it, but he complains that nobody is taking their predicament seriously.

Jean-Francois complains about the quality of the food in the common room, and promises Melody to cook her real french food when they are living on Earth. Melody invites Timmy to live with them, but their talk of food upsets him and he stroms off. Hartman sits down to eat, ignoring Petra's continuing requests that he attend Comcen.

Rosie lectures Victoria on student discipline. She tells her that certain privileges will be withdrawn if she disobeys the rules again. Victoria explains that the Dome is the place she feels closest to her father, but Rosie tells her to buck up and reveals that the Captain has an important job for her and Jean-Francois.

Eliot is telling Hartman, who is trying to trace the computer fault, about his lurid novels, when Rosie brings Victoria to Comcen. He asks her to analyse the dust that they are caught up in.

In the common room, Herlinde asks Piers if he is going to the winter ball. He replies that if she is going, how can he resist? Later in the Dome, Herlinde bribes Sara to talk to Finbow on her behalf.

Jean-Francois returns from the hanger bay with a dust sample that he has collected.

Piers and Rosie discuss the students that need watching over. Apart from Victoria, Timmy is losing weight, Anna Begani is suffering with stress and Herlinde is taking sleeping pills. They wonder about Finbow and Herlinde. Rosie is concerned that Finbow could get hurt.

Sara talks to Finbow in the club and says that Herlinde is worried about the affect their relationship will have on his career. Finbow agrees to cool things down, but is visibly upset.

Timmy tells Melody and Herlinde that he has stopped eating completely. On hearing Sara's news that Finbow isn't coming to the ball, Herlinde tells Sara and Melody that she has decided to set her sights on Piers.

Victoria and Jean-Francois discuss the properties of the dust. Victoria advocates hourly testing but the computer terminal goes down. Jean-Francois contacts Comcen and demands to know what is happening.

Melody steals one of Sara's cards from the box beneath her bunk.

Hartman returns to his cabin ignoring requests that he return to Comcen. Finbow calls him on his autosec but Hartman is tired after twelve hours of trying to find the system malfunction, and reminds Finbow that no one thought about him when he was trapped in the airlock.

In Comcen, Finbow reads the card he has been sent. It says "Je t'aime, tojours", and is signed "H".

Timmy is telling Daniel and Herlinde that he is learning to control his body to curb all desires, when Finbow passes and says to Herlinde "Je t'aime toujours - moi aussi". Herlinde is puzzled.

Hartman has found the fault. the cables to the lower deck rockets were damaged when to storm hit. He refuses to go out and fix it because it is outside the magnetic shield. Eliot tells him that someone must go out there.

Rosie is in the Dome lecturing Timmy about not eating his breakfast when the sky lights up as the storm starts a violent reaction. Hartman is now adamant that he will not go out. Eliot asks Petra to page Finbow Lewis...

In the physics lab, Victoria and Jean-Francois tell Piers that the dust, although volcanic in origin, is not from Io. They discuss the possibility that it could be from another solar system. Victoria suddenly notices that the dust samples are glowing strangely.
