The best way to describe Ocean City, New Jersey is that it takes the best of Cape May and the best of Wildwood, combines them both, and then adds an alcohol prohibition to make it even better. We'll probably be vacationing here in 1998, so there will be more stuff added here when that happens, like hotel recommendations.
Alcohol Prohibited
Ocean City, NJ is a DRY TOWN. This means that you aren't allowed to be anywhere outside with any type of alcoholic beverage. In addition, there are no liquor stores and as far as we know, no restaurants or bars that serve alcohol, either. Sorry, folks. This is the reason Ocean City stays as nice as it does. The unruly types stay away because they can't drink.
The Beach
Not a free one. If you're a guest at one of the hotels, you get free beach tags to use while you're there, but if you're driving up for the day, it's about $4 a person. This is worth it, though, because it helps keep the beach clean, since a large rowdy group will think twice before forking the dough over. The beach is short, so it's not a long walk to the water at all, when you step off of the boardwalk.
The Boardwalk
About 2 miles long. Only about 2/3 of it has shops and amusements. However, unlike Wildwood, listed below, there are no places to lose your money trying to win stuffed animals and other junk. The junky t-shirt rip off joints are at a minimum as well. Instead, the shops you'll find are nice ones, including an antique shop, book shops, and other shops worth looking in. At a certain point, the shops stop and the boardwalk gets really narrow and mainly serves as access to ocean front hotels, condos and apartments. If you're really into rides, Wildwood is a better choice, because there wasn't too much here that looked really interesting.
Restaurants-board walk & fast food type of stuff Burger King On the boardwalk. Curley's Fries On the boardwalk. Another branch of the joint started in Wildwood that serves the best french fries, fried dough and fresh lemon-lime shakeups anywhere on the boardwalk.
Shopping on the Boardwalk Laura's Fudge Yep, they're all over New Jersey. Another branch of the shop is described in detail in the Wildwood section.
