Time to sink: Approximately 2 hours 35 minutes
First class passengers: 130 lost, 199 saved
Second class passengers: 166 lost, 119 saved
Third class passengers: 536 lost, 174 saved
Crew: 685 lost, 214 saved
Totals: 2223 on board, 1517 lost, 706 saved

What caused the ship to sink, old ideas and new theories

The original thinking of the reason the ship sank was that the iceberg had ripped the hull from bow to about midway on the ship. That type of damage would have caused more than the allowed 2 forward compartments to fill with water and would cause the ship to sink
Newer theories that are backed up by evidence are that the plates, rather than rip due to impact, actually buckled and caused rivets to pop. Another theory takes that idea to a higher level, it claims that the steel used for the hull was of inferior quality, and that the specified plates would have been damaged far less. The hull plates were very brittle and when the impact occured, fractures along the hull occured in places that never touched the ice.

Just what type of person sailed on this ship?

The rich and affluent sailed on the Titanic and enjoyed a lifestyle that rivals that of any first class hotel then or since.
Second class passengers were able to afford some amenities and for the most part were families travelling back to America from a holiday in England. The service and accomodations they received were equivalent to the Carribean cruise liners used by most carriers today.
Third class or steerage passengers were mostly immigrants, looking to leave life in their homeland for a chance in "America" (for most of them, it was the answer to all their problems). Accomodations resembled crew quarters for small naval vessels of today, though not quite as private or sanitary. They weren't mistreated and those that could eat on their sea voyage had enough, but service toward them wasn't the same as for other passengers as expected.

Kathie Lee wouldn't need to sell a voyage on the Titanic. With rooms that had the finest furniture from throughout Europe and food that would make the finest chef hungry, this ship was designed to please.

In more than 2 and a half miles of water, the wreck is found.

It wasn't until recently that technology was advanced enough to approach the ocean floor. The wreck awaits visitors in 13000 feet of water. The pressure at that depth is enough to crush almost anything. Dr. Robert Ballard was the first to find the ship and made it a labor of love until just recently. Russian and French teams have also made visits to the site.
A company by the name of Titanic Inc. is attempting to recover items from the wreck and portions of the wreck itself. Their success with obtaining portions of the ship has been promising. They lost a piece they were trying to raise only 50 ft from the surface and that was only because of rough seas and bad heavy duty ropes that were used to lift the peice near the top. This company has recovered many artifacts and has used the proceeds from the sale of actual coal from the wreck to finance a worldwide exhibit of the unsinkable ship.

Artifacts from the wreck are on display!

The amount of artifacts has grown so large that the touring exhibit has been broken up into 4 different groups at our last count. Needless to say, there are plenty of opportunities out there for you Titanic buffs to see some cool stuff. And keep in mind, RMS Titanic is very stingy about photo rights, so none of the exhibits will allow any kind of photo or video equipment in, so don't weigh yourself down with any of it. Sorry, folks!
