SELWIN

Selwin, the first horror host to broadcast in the Indianapolis area, held forth on Friday Nights on WISH Channel 8 beginning in Fall of 1958. The Show was called Fright Night. After a time he was switched to Saturday mornings where, dressed in pith helmet and brandishing his "Selwinchester", he hosted Tarzan and Bomba the Jungle Boy movies. He was later returned to Friday Nights to host science fiction movies. Selwin was played by Ray Sparenburg, a director at the station, and created and written by Dave Smith, then the program manager at Channel 8. Selwin's reign over Hoosier airwaves ended in 1963. After that Ray moved to Atlanta where he briefly attempted to revive the character without the success he'd had in Indy. Special thanks to Dave Smith for the video from which these images were taken.
