I am your friend. I am not your friend. I'm the man you can't kill. I am Set. I am Ahriman. I am everything your people call demons and devils. I am anger. I am the dark. I bring chaos and fear; doubt and anarchy. I existed before time began, and I will exist when time has ended. For you, all that matters is that you cannot stop me.
No, wait! That's something else! That's not who I am at all! So who am I...really?
That's an excellent question! And it's one that you're just not going to get answered here today, Paco. I do, however, have interests other than Highlander. The links below are accompanied by a description of why they belong here on my personal page. Hopefully, by learning of my other interests, you'll begin to get a better picture as to who -- or what -- I really am.
Dilbert is real. Okay, he may not be flesh and bone like you or me, but his life and circumstances are truer than any of us like to admit. United Media has Scott Adams's relentless corporation-bashing cartoon available on-line one week after its printed newspaper run. If you missed a few, they're also stored in a four-week archive.
If there's one thing I hate, it's speeding along an unfamiliar stretch of the information superhighway only to have a cheesy MIDI song blast out of my speakers when I least suspect it. It makes me jump, and it's as annoying as hell to deal with while I try to concentrate on reading the webpage. The noise is unpleasant. Uninvited. Unwelcome. Definitely unamusing. And usually it's a bad version of "Lady in Red." I can't let my anger get the best of me, though. There are a lot of great sounds on the web, and http://www.headspace.com/ has a terrific plug-in called Beatnik. It handles MIDIs, MODs, WAVs, AIFFs, and AUs, plus a few other audio file formats that even I've never heard of. It's unintrusive, it's reliable, it's free, it's what I use. It's Beatnik.
Note: If you're one of those people who really does have a sound on your website that automatically plays anytime someone goes to your page, please, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, TURN IT OFF!!! Do you have any idea how annoying that is?!?!
Math is pretty. Pretty hard, that is. If there's another thing I hate, it's integral calculus. If there's a third thing I hate, it's getting smashed in the face with the back of a shovel, but that's neither here nor there. Just because I couldn't tell a tensor from a tonsil doesn't mean that math ain't nice to look at. This baby to your left is the Mandelbrot Set, and it's the result of a special kind of math that makes steam shoot out of my ears. Nonetheless, it's a wonderous thing to behold. You can learn more about the M-Set at any number of places on-line, but my personal favorite is JavaMan: the Java Mandelbrot Generator. In fact, it's where I got this image. The M-Set also plays a minor-but-frequent role in Arthur C. Clarke's The Ghost from the Grand Banks. It's a terrific book, and I recommend it to anyone who's a big Titanic fan such as myself, although it happens to be out of print and not in the bookstores. Check your local library.
