ASSISTANT DIRECTOR VAULTER SPINNER
Assistant Director Spinner is Sculder and Mully's fast talking, no nonsense superior.
Once dubbed the unluckiest boss in the world, Spinner is the man who has to try and
keep charge of the agents as they persue their ever more extraordinary cases.
However, over the years his involvement and belief in their work has increased, to the
point where he is now both valuable ally and convenient supporting cast member
when the writer needs one.
Originally, Spinner followed his FBI line to the book, even supporting the Pipe
Smoking Man's cover ups of the agents' early cases. (Shallow Throat)
However, after leaking the Xmas file which led directly to Mully's abduction
Spinner showed a new side of himself, revealing to Sculder a belief in the paranormal
and a hatred of the forces preventing him from doing his job.
(Restoration)
He first demonstrated his allegiance by overturning the Pipe Smoking Man's direct
instructions and re-opening the Hex Files (Les Visiteurs). His loyalty,
however, was tested to its limits when Sculder’s paranoid behaviour caused him to
attack the Assistant Director himself (Exodus Res Dana). Spinner had no
choice
but to suspend Sculder from the FBI, and then Mully as well when she disobeyed
orders from the Section Chief. (PS234) It was to be Spinner, though, who'd
negotiate with the Pipe Smoking Man for the reinstatement of both agents. His
choice of allegiance would later nearly cost him his own life when he was targeted by
an assassin
(Cabrit Sans Cord)
However, Spinner's position in the hierarchy and his secrecy has meant even his
agents can mistrust him, especially when he had to
spy on Mully to try and find out what was going on in relation to Sculder's apparent
suicide (Redox) And he has had to try and control Sculder and Mully's
investigations when major forces are involved, trying to save them from the mistakes
which led to the closure of the Hex Files (The End of the Beginning)
Although not being able to effect the course of actions the FBI took in blaming the
agents for
the subsequent Dallas bombing, he did play a key role in clearing their names and
then forcing the Hex Files open once again. (The Hex Files Movie) However,
that intervention made it clear to the FBI that he was protecting their interests and, as
a result, they severed all contact between Spinner and the agents.
Spinner, though, continued to covertly continue the work he believed in. He tipped
Sculder and Mully off about a new viral outbreak (The Beginning of the
End) to try and prove the conspiracy, and helped Mully find inside information to
save Sculder when he fell into mortal danger on a covert Hex File investigation
(Spaced Out) He aided the agents with their investigation into the Pipe
Smoking Man and the Posh Club, which eventually led to their being reinstated on the
Hex Files. (Tomorrow's End) And, after seeing Sculder's abduction by the alien Colonists in Ohiyurung (Life), he became a firm believer and vowed to aid
Mully in her search for her partner.
After being removed from the manhunt, Spinner assisted Mully's covert search for
Sculder and contacted the Tone Deaf Swordsmen. (The Universe) Once again
risking his position in the FBI, and his life at the hands of the alien Bounty Hunter,
Spinner travelled with Mully to Arizona to assist in her search. Their attempt to recover
Sculder may have failed, but Spinner has proved himself as good as his word in not
denying the existence of the alien Colonists. He also put his own life in jeopardy, by
confronting and fighting Alec Bicep to discover information about the whereabouts of
Sculder. (Invasion Earth) After Sculder's arrest by the military, he arranged
the trial to save his agent's life and acted as his defence. And then he travelled with the
agents to the site of the Colonist invasion, risking his life to help defeat them, and to
settle an old score with the Pipe Smoking Man. X-Files Equivalent: Assistant Director Walter Skinner
