Dr. Joe Early, played by Bobby Troup, is a neurosurgeon who donates his time to the Emergency Room. This may have to do with him having been Dr. Brackett's intern. Dr. Early has a calming bedside manner, which he probably did not learn from Brackett, and often treats children at the ER. He has been a patient at Rampart for heart by-pass surgery. Dr. Early is very fond of Capt. Stanley's clam chowder.
