TV NEWS THEMES

Here are some of the TV news themes I have, they are only clips and not the entire theme. Remember all themes are copyrighted by the author and station, the copyrighted date you see listed is when I recorded the theme. This page is divided into three parts.(1) Past and present TV news themes from the Philadelphia stations, (2) News themes from other local stations around the country, (3) Links to other sites with TV news themes.

I know listening to news themes is an unusual hobby. But for those of you who live in the Delaware Valley, you know when the Action News theme comes on it just makes you want to dance!!

This is the full close of the theme KYW used to end it's newscasts in 1986.

The News Tonight
In 1991 KYW dumped the Eyewitness News format and began calling it's 11pm news "The News Tonight", this was the closing theme used between 1991-94.

In 1991 KYW dumped the Eyewitness News name and began calling it's 6pm news "NewsBeat", this was the closing theme used between 1991-94.

In 1991 KYW dumped the Eyewitness News name and began calling it's early morning news "NewsDay", this was the closing themes used between 1991-94.

This was the theme used for teases and the close. Newsmakers continues to air during the weekend morning editions of Eyewitness News.

In 1994 KYW changed it's name again to KYW News 3. This was the closing theme used for the 6 and 11pm newscasts between 1994-97.

In 1997 KYW changed it's theme. This theme was originally used in 1993 for Larry Kane's KYW newsmagazine "The Bulletin", now cancelled. Here is one of the themes used for teases between 1997-98.

Ch.3 Eyewitness News
In February of 1998 KYW borrowed a page from the past and renamed it's news Eyewitness News. Here is a clip of the close used until May 1999.

In May 1999, KYW now under the management of Joel Cheatwood, changed it's theme again. This was the close. As a bonus you get to hear the legendary Larry Kane say goodnight. They got a new theme in February 2001.

WPVI-TV 6-ABC

Ch.6 Action News
Move Closer to Your World...This is WPVI's "national anthem", the current Action News closing theme with the ID at the end. They have been using this theme since Action News was created by WPVI in 1970.

This version of the Action News theme was used to end the discontinued Action News Issues and Answers program on WPVI.

A Masterpiece! Here is a similar version of the "Action News Issues and Answers" closing theme. This is the WPVI theme without the piano music, it was recorded from a WKBW Buffalo newscast.

In what some called a radical move. In 1997, WPVI modified it's Action News theme. Viewers were livid, WPVI received a lot of complaints and they changed back to the old theme. This theme only lasted about 5 days on the air! Here is the theme without the ID at the end. This theme first appeared on The Rosie O'Donnell Show. O'Donnell saluted WPVI for moving her show from 2am to 10am, Dave Roberts was her special guest.

Big Daddy Graham's Action News Theme
Hear the Action News theme like you've never heard it before. Performed by radio talk show host and standup comic BIG DADDY GRAHAM.

In April 1999 Action News changed its closing theme adding a new voice over ID at the end identifying the station as "6ABC" instead of "Channel 6". In July 1999, WPVI went back to the old way. In this clip, you get to hear Jim Gardner and his trademark close!!

WCAU-TV NBC-10

Channel 10 News
This was the front end of the theme WCAU used to end it's newscasts from 1986-1995.

Channel 10 News-Election
This was the theme WCAU used for election coverage.

Newscenter 10
In 1995, WCAU changed it's name to Newscenter 10 in preparation for the station's sale to NBC. This was the opening theme.

News 10
In 1995 CBS sold WCAU to NBC and WCAU changed the name of its news to News 10. This was the closing theme used from 1995-1997.

In 1997, WCAU changed it's theme again. In this theme, the first few notes are similar to the "Action News" opening. This was the theme used for teases and to close newscasts. They got a new theme and changed the name of their newscasts to NBC-10 News in late 2000.

WPHL-TV WB17

Inquirer News Tonight
In 1994 WPHL-TV along with the Philadelphia Inquirer launched a 10pm newscast called Inquirer News Tonight. This was the theme used for teases and close.

In 1995 WPHL-TV changed their news theme. This was the theme used for teases and close.

Philadelphia's WB17 News at Ten
In 1996, WPHL-TV and The Philadelphia Inquirer parted company. WPHL renamed the newscast WB17 News at Ten and changed the theme as well. This was the theme used for the close until 2000.

WTXF-TV FOX-29

The Ten O'Clock News
The Ten O'Clock News premiered in 1986 as the Delaware Valley's first primetime newscast. This was the open until 1997.

WTXF changed the theme of its news in 1997. This was the news theme close used through the late 1990's.

NEW JERSEY NETWORK 23-50-52-58 PBS

This is the news theme currently used for the close and teases. "The Emmy Award Winning NJN News" started using this theme a couple of years ago.

WMGM-TV NBC-40

Newscenter 40
This was the news theme used to end WMGM's newscasts from April 1990 to 1997. The theme along with a new set was introduced when WMGM moved from its studios in Avalon, NJ to Linwood NJ. Prior to 1990, WMGM used various themes including John Williams' famous "The Mission" music package, used on NBC network newscasts. Thanks to Ed Senior, a former WMGM employee for the information.

Now here are the words to the Newscenter 40 theme. I think everyone who lives along the Jersey Shore knows it.

This was the news theme used to end WMGM's newscasts from 1997-98. The theme sounds similar to WPLG-TV Miami's old theme. Currently WMGM uses the same news theme as WTVJ-TV Miami, their newscasts are now titled "NBC40 News".
