Videos--October 13, 1998 (U.S.)

[Old Box Cover]

[Australian Cover|Advance Sleeve Printing|Mexican Cover|Australian Rental Version Dealer Preview Video--"Rarest X-Files Video Ever"! (back)]

[Finnish Cover|Comparison Between Australian Versions With and Without the Making-of Feature]

The U.S. videos have extra scenes in them (WMM's Samantha explanation, more scenes of the alien in the opening scene, and others) and interviews with Chris Carter and Gillian Anderson. Before the movie are trailers A and C. The videos are THX mastered and in Dolby Surround.

The international/U.K. Special Edition is in a transparent red collector's box. It was rumored (falsely) that the tape would be clear like a cassette or metallic. Both widescreen and pan & scan are available. The U.S. video extras are included. There is a dispute, at least in Australia, about the packaging and contents of the Special Editions: "There are (at least) two (possibly three) different versions of The X-Files Movie: Special Edition. The video I have includes a 30-minute special (which screened on TV just before the movie hit the cinemas in Australia last year) titled The Making of The X-Files Movie. This is announced via a sticker on the front cover of the video. Someone else on the other hand has a video that doesn't have the 30-minute special, but has instead a 10-15 minute interview with Chris Carter and Gillian Anderson (which by the way is mentioned on the cover of my video, but not included)." The truth: The version including the 30-minute special is available at K-Mart, Target, and Fossey's. The version with the interviews is available everywhere else. The erroneous sticker described above was a mistake by the manufacturer. The 2 versions were made to give the Fox publicity people in Australia something to do. Seriously! The Australian rental version (pan & scan only available) includes the "One" by Filter music video and ads for the Special Edition retail version of the video, Files 1-12, "One Son" on video, Wave 2, and the soundtrack, but none of the other extras. The U.K. rental version has similar additions, including leaflets promoting the movie flashlights/torches (inside) and "One Son" on video. X-Files movie calendars are being given out for renting the Mexican rental version and another Fox movie. The Special Editions also include a collector's card, the 2nd piece (the one on the right) of a 9-piece puzzle. Click here for a view of the front and back. (Here, here, here, and here are promo slips for the card that came with the Australian versions of the "One Son," Special Edition, "Biogenesis," and "Closure" videos respectively.) But in the U.K., a manufacturing error resulted in none of the cards being included with the Special Editions. Instead, they were included along with the "One Son" cards with the "One Son" videos.

The Special Edition Limited First Edition videos come in cardboard boxes the same as the Special Edition video covers but with a black bar saying "Special Limited Edition" on it. The videos were limited to 50,000. The number is on the spine of the cover. Limited-edition cardboard-boxed videos are called "Warm Packs."

5x7" lithographs are being given out to buyers of the videos in the U.S., and Blockbuster is giving out free 5-minute phone cards. These are different than the ones that came with some copies of the soundtrack. Not to mention the promo video card, which is the box image on 14x9" card stock.

Video CDs--November 30, 1998

[Other Version of the Front Cover (possibly made in a different country than the above version)]

[Alternate Bootleg Back Cover]

The Video CDs require a computer (or certain DVD players) to view. There are 2 discs in the movie Video CD--one with the extras and one with the movie. The only real versions of this are sold in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Indonesia. All the others are bootlegs--beware of them and check the covers above before you buy!

The Making of Video CD is made by Deltamac. The Indonesian Video CD is made by Musica VideoVan.

LaserDiscs--December 8, 1998

  • LaserDisc (Image Exclusive; Dolby Digital-encoded)

LaserDiscs--January 12, 1999

[Other Picture]

The LaserDiscs have the same interviews and extra scenes as the videos. There are 2 discs in one package because there are 3 sides to the movie. The DTS version has one more chapter than the AC-3 version, 22.

The LaserDiscs are made by Image Entertainment.

DVDs--May 4, 1999 (U.S.)

[Old Artwork]

[Disc]

The U.S. DVDs have the video extras, plus a full-length secondary audio track that plays simultaneously with the movie and features commentary by Chris Carter and Rob Bowman. Also there is a 30-minute behind-the-scenes featurette, the same one from the collector's set narrated by Mitch Pileggi. It includes GA and CC interviews. The DVDs were going to have even more extra scenes, including the alternate ending with Mulder and CSM and presumably the scene where Mulder and Scully try to start their car after the corn chase while the helicopters are flying above them, but that's not going to happen. Other included scenes might have been Mulder running down the street after being in the hospital, Kurtzweil saying "The truth is something you've never guessed. Never have predicted," and the scene where the camera swoops over mountains in the Antarctic. The DVD is in Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround, is THX mastered, and has a French Dolby Surround track and Spanish subtitles. It is RSDL-encoded (for long movies) and is in the 2.35:1 widescreen ratio. It will also include an 8-page booklet inside the case with notes. It is in 18 chapters. Features that all Fox DVDs from March 9 on will have include full-motion menus (with sound and animation, featuring the teaser posters' designs), cast and crew biographies (the interviews), and film notes (the booklet). There will be the ability to switch audio on the fly (from the primary to secondary commentary track or French-language track). Also expect unadvertised goodies. The DVD includes trailers A, B, & C. It is in Amaray keep case packaging.

"Menus: Region 1 is in 16:9 letterbox; Region 2 is in 16:9 anamorphic. The music on the R2 is the same but played noticeably (and laughably) quicker. I have no idea why! The root menu's text is farther to the right on the R2, and is the same except it says 'Play Movie' instead of just 'Play.' All the graphics, fonts, layout, and animations are the same as the R1 except this, and what is listed here. Sound: R1 has English 5.1 and 2.0, French 2.0, and the commentary. R2 has just English 5.1 and the commentary. Subtitles: R1 has English and Spanish. R2 has English, no Spanish, but does have Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Portuguese, Hebrew, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, and Icelandic, as I reported before. Extras: Just the original trailer A (no submenu for trailers, therefore). It is the American version, rather than the U.K. version (which had the U.K. date at the end) presumably as it is a pan-European disc rather than a U.K.-specific one. (U.K. versions of trailers A and C were previously on U.K. Files 10-12.) All other extras are present (but as I rented it, I have no way of checking if the booklet is there--someone else will have to clarify that). Picture: R1 is letterboxed 2.35:1 at 5.87 Mbps average, peaking around 8.3 Mbps. R2 is anamorphic 2.40:1 at 6.34 Mbps average, peaking around 8.8 Mbps. The difference (if indeed there is one) in the two picture sizes is so miniscule I didn't even bother to see if it was noticeable. The R2 bitrate is higher as more picture info is being stored (it's anamorphic), but in my humble, and entirely subjective, opinion I think the R1 version looks better (the blacks looked a bit dodgy on R2). By the shapes of the bitrate graphs, it is obvious they are two completely different transfers. Length: R1 is 1:57:40, R2 is 2:02:28. This is completely normal and the whole film is present (including the extra Mulder/WMM bit). Due to some standards conversion, all films released over here are 25/24 times the speed of the American version. It's something to do with PAL being 25 fps and cinema being 24 fps, but I can't see how that ties in with the U.S. version being the original length.... Disc content: 7.23 Gb for R1, 6.88 Gb for R2. Both are RSDL discs. Layer switch is at 40:17 on R1, but 41:56 on R2 (as the guard enters the morgue). Save the most interesting for last: the R2 version has DVD-ROM content. Just for the sake of it, apparently, as all it is is the PC Friendly software (the same as the one on The Matrix). On startup this gives you three options: play the movie, go to www.x-files.com, and technical support (another Internet link). It also puts some Fox links in PC Friendly's channel bar. (Hardly worth bothering about, really!)" The booklet that comes with the U.S. DVDs is in fact not included.

The U.S. DVDs are made by Image Entertainment.

Divx--October 16, 1998

The Divx version has the same extras that the video has, and is in Dolby Digital surround and pan & scan format.

  • Screendragon Enhanced CD #2 (another of those several promotions...doesn't include the entire Web site and only has 1 soundtrack song; given away with the movie at HMV stores in Australia from August 11-18, 1999 and includes production notes on the Special Edition video)

Postcards--July 1998-December 1998

[All Four Poster Postcards from Australia|Back]

[Back of French Postal Service Postcards (include stamps)]

[Classico SF 6-Postcard Set/The X-Files Movie Jumbo Postcard Set (comes in a white envelope with movie logo on outside)]

The last 11 postcards are made by Classico San Francisco. Postcards of posters A-C came with the U.K. video of "Patient X." The Asian postcards are individually packaged in plastic sleeves. The 2 postcards before the Classico ones are made by Cinescope.

Posters--June 1998

[Poster D Image]

The first four posters were made in theatrical versions (Italian, 14x28 or 40x48; U.S., 27x40; U.S. "bus stop," 48x72; French, 46x62; German, 33x46; Japanese, 20x28; and British, 40x30 or 16x12 inches) and commercial versions (German, 23x33; British, 23x35; and U.S., 27x39 or 24x36 inches), also known as reprints. The first three posters were advance posters. Originally the rumors were that there would be six advance posters, but that never happened. Apparently, preliminary artwork for the advance posters featured bees and honeycomb patterns. Does anyone have any pictures of these early versions? The theatrical versions were made in single- and double-sided, and U.S. and international versions. All international versions were double-sided, and didn't include the PG-13 rating or the release date of June 19, and had "theaters" spelled "theatres." Some international versions were also translated to other languages (like this Polish version of Poster E, this Italian version of Poster D, these French versions of Poster A, Poster B, Poster C, and Poster D [Alternate Poster D #1|Alternate Poster D #2], this British version of Poster D, these Spanish [specifically, Argentina] versions of Poster A, Poster B, Poster C, Poster D, and Poster E, this German version of Poster D, this Japanese version of Poster D, and these Korean versions of Poster B, Poster D, and Poster E). The commercial versions are single-sided and made by Global One. Poster E is VERY rare and was only made internationally. No commercial version was made of poster E.

These were originally supposed to come out in June 1998 as commercial posters but were never released.

This one, however, was released as the fifth commercial poster after posters A-D, but was never a theatrical poster.

Mugs--June 1998

I'm looking for a picture of the mug.

Lunchboxes Etc.

  • Lunchbox (released for 3 separate runs, 3,000 made in total)
  • Thermos (limited-edition; released for 1 run of as little as 300 out of 1,000 made)

The lunchboxes and Thermoses are made by G Whiz! A second lunchbox was rumored but not made.

Collectible Toys [top]

Action Figures--June 1998

There are 10 packaged combinations of 10 different figures, not including the special promo 3-pack, which was made to promote the video release and sold only at Sam's Club. (Some have reported a Mulder with 2 left arms in the 3-pack!) The figures are made by McFarlane Toys. There were rumors about a special collector's figure to be made for members of the official McFarlane Toys Collector's Club (CSM?), but it was never made. A mistake was made with the Scully figures. Some early "with suit" (Scully in Grey Suit with Victim in Cryopod, Scully in Grey Suit with Autopsy Victim and Gurney) figures were accidentally painted grey on the suits, and she had long eyelashes. These are now very rare. Also there are many other variations in the action figures' paint schemes, packaging, and accessories, as many as 124 or more! For example, from the first combination of Case B to the second, the Neanderthal with Attack Alien packaging has changed so that it is the same size as the 1st and 2nd packages in Case B. In general, there are two versions of the packaging (card), a larger one and a smaller one with rounded edges and the X-Files logo sticking out the top. Some packages also have stickers saying "Series 1." Also, the cryolitters were in at least 3 variations: an unhinged silver one, and two hinged gold ones, one with more "plumbing" than the other. (Red and Blue Fireman Victim with Grey Cryolitter Tanks, Red Fireman Victim with Yellow Cryolitter Tanks, Red Fireman Victim with Grey Cryolitter Tanks, Blue Fireman Victim with Grey Cryolitter Tanks) Also, the cryopods went through some changes. Some firemen have slits to remove the little baby alien. There are two cases containing the individual packages, each case with 12 figures. Case A, going from the first to the fourth package in the list above, has 3 of each set (3/3/3/3). Case B, going from the first to the sixth package, has either a 3/3/3/1/1/1 or a 3/3/2/1/1/2 combination. All of the figures are Series 1; they are distinguished by which case they came from. Case A is also called Assortment 1 or 16100; B is called Assortment 2 or 16110. Series 2 (16130) would have been from the show but it was canceled.

Large Action Figures--September 1998

[Closeup]

The above pictures are of prototypes. The figures were never made. McFarlane Toys was supposedly going to make them, and they are 9" tall. There were rumors of McFarlane making these figures as special 9" collector's items. The official magazine mentioned them in one issue. Thanks to Fren for the info and pictures!

Small Action Figures--September 1998

  • Mulder
  • Scully

There were also rumors of these small-scale 3 3/4" figures being made, but they were never put in production. Does anyone know anything about them?

Movie Cards--June 1998

There are 72 "Super Premium" cards, with top-secret movie scenes and heat-sensitive, thermo-chromatic "black oil" cards which reveal secrets and scenes (Mystery Insert Cards).
