“You can’t quit! You’re fired!” Luke screamed back into the club as he walked into his office. He started slightly when he saw Felicia standing in his office.
“Hiya Orphy.”
Felicia came up to him and hugged him tightly.
“How’d you know I was back in town?” Luke said as he released himself from Felicia’s hold.
“I talked to Bobbie today.” She said quietly, then she gestured to the door he’d just come through. “Did you fire Claude again?”
Luke frowned slightly at that. “Not exactly, he quit.”
Felicia laughed. “So he finally had enough of you, huh?”
Luke chuckled slightly, “I don’t doubt that he has, but he’s quitting cause he got offered another job he just can’t turn down.” Luke said with sarcasm lacing his voice. “He’s gonna go manage one of those boy bands everyone’s so hot about.” Luke mumbled something about no one appreciating good blues anymore and continued. “Now I have to find a new manager who appreciates my sense of humor and knows that you don’t serve the good stuff to everybody.”
“Well I could always help for a while.”
Luke looked at her thoughtfully “I appreciate the offer darlin’, but I think Bubba would string me up if you spent anymore time here.”
“Oh don’t worry about Mac.” Felicia said dissmisively.
“Maybe you should.” Luke said softly. Felicia looked a little stricken.
Luke walked to her and put his hands on her shoulders. “Now darlin’ I will always be thankful to you for helping me get my mind off of Lucky, but it’s time I get back to reality. And it’s time for you to get back to your family.”
Felicia nodded “Yeah, I know. That’s why I came by.”
Luke nodded. He knew for a long time that they were both just distractions for each other, and it was only a matter of time before reality set in.
“Can we still be friends Luke?” Felicia asked hopefully.
“Always Orphy.” Luke said smiling. “Once you track down that whirlwind of a friend we call Lucy, you two come down to the club and we’ll have ourselves a ball.”
Felicia smiled, but tears were pooling in her eyes. “You gotta deal Hiram.”
Luke smiled, but his smile faded when he heard shouts coming from the club. A few seconds later Dani charged into his office with Claude hot on her heals, trying to stop her.
“Will you get off of me!?!” Dani snarled at Claude, shrugging off his hand from her shoulder.
“Boss, this young lady was trying to claim that she’s your daughter.” Claude said, sounding like the possibility was impossible.
“A: I’m not your boss, you quit remember! And 2: I know it’s hard to believe that this beautiful young woman is my daughter but it’s the truth.” Luke said getting puzzled looks from both Claude and Felicia.
“But Boss…” Claude started, completely confused.
“You!” Luke said pointing dangerously at Claude. “You don’t get an explanation! You’re fired remember!”
“I thought I quit.”
“That too! Now go watch the bar.”
Claude just shrugged and walked back out to the club.
Luke turned to see Felecia’s very confused face staring back at him.
“It’s a long story blondie, and I promise I will tell you all the gory details the next time you’re here, but the short of it is that Dani’s mother died a few days ago and left us with the revelation that I’m her father.”
“Wow, that sounds like it’s going to be some story, and don’t think I’m gonna let you get away with not telling me either.” Felicia said smiling. She gave Luke a light kiss on the cheek and turned to Dani.
“I’m sorry about your mother Dani.”
“Thank you.” Dani said politely.
Felicia walked out the door and Dani turned to Luke.
“Isn’t she a little young for you?”
“Oh shut up.” Luke grumbled. “Well what has your feathers ruffled?”
“Other than the fact that I was just accosted and that I almost got lost coming here?”
“Yeah besides that.” Luke smirked.
Dani sighed and dropped the papers she was holding on Luke’s desk. “Bobbie asked me to take Lulu home and when I did Laura and I… had words.” Dani said hesitantly.
“What did she say to you?”
“Luke it’s not important…” Dani said shaking her head, as much as she might not like Laura right now she didn’t want that to affect Luke.
“Dani I want to know.”
“No, that’s between Laura and me. Right now it’s something I can handle so I don’t want you involved.” Dani said firmly.
Luke knew that look in her eye; she wasn’t about to back down anytime this century. Luke would just have to ask Laura what happened.
Luke picked up the folded blue papers and eyed them suspiciously. "So what are these for?"
"Laura said to give them to you." She said shortly trying her damnedest not to interject her opinion of the woman who let someone else deliver what was so obviously divorce papers to her husband of over 18 years, a husband she didn't deserve as far as Dani was concerned. She smirked at the thoughts running through her head. Well she never said that she wouldn't have her own opinions about Laura, just that she wouldn't share them with Luke.
Luke dropped the papers on the desk and sat back in his chair. He knew what was probably written on the inside, and he didn't want to open them in front of Dani.
Dani flopped tiredly into the chair opposite Luke's desk, thankful that he wasn't going to read those papers now.
"So what was all that about Claude quitting? Don't you usually fire him?" She said, officially changing the subject.
Luke groaned at the mention of Claude. "Yeah that's usually how it goes, but today he quit before I could fire him!" Luke said frowning. Dani chuckled and received a glare from Luke.
"Anyway, now I have to find another manager, and this time I'm getting one that won't hire one of those silly boy bands." Luke grumbled.
Dani snickered at Luke. "Well speaking of work, can I use the phone?" When Luke nodded she got out of the chair and picked up the phone and began dialing the number.
"I need to call Ray and make sure he's got everything under control at the club. I really feel bad for leaving him in the lurch, even if he said he understood."
Luke smiled as he heard her words, he had forgotten that she managed a nightclub in Florida up until yesterday.
Dani put down the phone with a sigh. "He wasn't there, but I left a message and the number at the brownstone so he can call if he can't find something or suddenly can't read my handwriting... What?" She asked as she notices Luke grinning at her like he had the idea of the century. "Why are you grinning at me like that?" She said nervously sitting down, when Luke had an idea; it wasn't necessarily a good thing.
"I just had an epiphany!" Luke proclaimed, his grin growing even wider.
Dani smirked and asked dryly, "Did it hurt?"
Luke ignored her remark. "You should work for me!"
Dani frowned. "What?!"
"I need a manager I can trust and you need a job, and you ran that nightclub in Florida for what, the last two years? So I think you might just might have enough experience to work at Luke's." Luke said, very proud of himself for coming up with the idea.
"Luke I don't think that's such a good idea." Dani said shaking her head.
“Why not?” He said acting offended that she would disagree.
“Luke, I know you want to get to know me as your daughter but don’t you think that living with you and working for you might be pushing it a little?” Dani said smiling so that he would know that she meant it lightly.
“Okay, okay, you have a point. I wouldn’t want you cramping my style.” Luke said grinning in a way that made Dani roll her eyes.
“Well just listen to this.” Luke said as an idea came to him. “What if I move into the brownstone and you move into the apartment above the club? The plumbing is getting fixed right now so you’ll have to stay at the brownstone for a week.”
Dani’s hand went to her forehead to somehow stop the headache she felt certain was coming. “Luke it’s already been a very long day. I’m in a new town, with new family, and a new father. And now Bobbie wants to have a family dinner of some sort. I think I just need to think about this for a while.”
Luke nodded, and then frowned. “What’s this about a family dinner?”
Dani sighed and got up. “I don’t know. She said she wanted to introduce me to the family, but I think all that means is Caroline and Michael and she did say she was going to invite Elizabeth too.”
Luke groaned. “Oh geez, Port Charles’ human tornado and Elizabeth in the same room, with throwable food? I don’t think Barbara knows quite what she’s gotten herself into.”
Dani laughed at Luke’s prediction of the evening. “Oh come on, Caroline can’t be that bad.”
“Well I’ll admit she’s all Spencer, but she needs to learn that family is off limits in her little schemes. And that family also makes the best collaborators. It’s the Spencer rule.” Luke said firmly.
Dani laughed. “Luke, the ‘Spencer Rule’ has changed every time you told it to me. And I think you’ve never actually been mad at Caroline for anything she did to anybody, you’re just mad cause she never asked you to help.”
“What she did to Barbara Jean was stupid to say the least, but Barbara forgave her.” Luke said shrugging his shoulders.
“Well I have to say I’m intrigued to meet the famous Caroline Spencer, or Carly Roberts, or Benson or what ever she’s calling herself now.” Dani said standing and shrugging into her jacket. “I’ve got to go find Kelly’s and get some chili for Bobbie.”
“It’s not too hard to find, but probably if I give you directions you’ll get lost”
“Thank you for sparing me.” Dani said dryly and the pointed at him forcefully. “Dinner’s in an hour and Bobbie will kill me if you’re late!”
Luke put up his hands in defeat. “Okay, okay, I’ll do by best to be on time.”
Dani smiled at him and walked out the door.
Luke sighed tiredly and ran his hand over his face. He looked at the blue papers on his desk and immediately picked up the phone and dialed.

Laura sighed heavily as she opened the front door and saw who was on the other side.
“Stefan.” She said, her voice strained.
“How are you doing this afternoon Laura?” He asked leaning in to kiss her lips, but frowned when she avoided him and kissed his cheek.
“Is something troubling you?” He said with concern as Laura let him enter and closed the door behind him. Laura sighed. “It’s just been a long day that’s all.” She said choosing not to Stefan about Luke’s visit.
Stefan walked into the living room and spotted the folded blue papers that were Laura’s copies of the divorce papers. He quickly picked them up and opened them.
“Stefan what are you doing?” She asked trying to take the papers from him.
“These are divorce papers Laura, why wouldn’t you want me to see these?” Stefan said, turning around. He was smiling like he’d won something.
“Stefan, those were my papers in my home and you shouldn’t have just picked them up and started reading!”
Stefan waved off her protests. “Nonsense Laura, this is cause for celebration. We could go out to dinner, or I could have Mrs. Landsbury prepare a special dinner. Lesley Lu could come and I could call Nikolas and make it a real family dinner.” Stefan said still wearing that grin that implied that he’d done something he was proud of.
“ ‘Celebration’?” Laura said incredulously. “The thing that was the main presence in my life for the past 18 years is over and you want to celebrate? I’m getting a divorce, I didn’t win the lottery!”
“Laura I thought you wanted this.” Stefan said, honest confusion crossing his face. "I thought you would be happy about this."
"I am." She lied. "But I don't think it's a good idea to tell Lulu that you're having a victory dinner to celebrate her Mommy and Daddy getting a divorce!" Laura hissed.
"Darling, I'm sorry if I feel a little bit joyous, but we are finally free to be together." He said reaching out to pull her to him. But she stiffened under his embrace and shrugged him off violently.
"Contrary to what you may think I am not divorcing Luke for you. I am divorcing him because this marriage is over." She said, trying to hold in her emotions.
"But Laura, I assumed that when you divorced Luke we'd be together. I thought you loved me." Stefan said calmly, sounding more like he was negotiating a deal rather than trying to hold onto his love. It was then that Laura realized that he didn't have that panic in his voice. That panic that everyone feels when they think they're about to loose the one they love. And then she realized that she didn't feel that panic either.
"I do love you Stefan." Which was true enough, she did feel love for him, but she also felt love for Foster. "But is it so hard to believe that after just ending a marriage I was committed to for 18 years, a marriage I thought was going to beat the odds, that I might not want to jump into another very complicated, very serious relationship? And I know we talked about this, and I made promises to you, but all of a sudden it's all very real to me and I just need a little time."
Stefan nodded his head solemnly. "All right, I'll give you the time and space you've requested. Just remember, I love you." He caressed her cheek lovingly and retreated out the door.
Laura narrowed her eyes at the door he'd just closed. Her earlier instincts were right, he was negotiating for something. But why? She had expected to be happy about the divorce, but somehow this was different. And it unnerved her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luke stared blankly at the folded blue papers. He hadn’t even looked at them yet. It would all look like gibberish to him anyway, and besides, he knew what they said. His marriage was over.
Luke looked up as the door to his office burst open and Alexis stormed in, her eyes flashing in anger.
“You cannot just summon me whenever you feel like it!”
“Hello to you too Natasha.” Luke smirked.
“We are not partners anymore and I will not come when ever you say ‘I need to see you.’ And what kind of cryptic game are you playing anyway?” She said, finally winding down on her tirade.
Luke smiled with a little devious amusement. “So you came all the way down here to tell me you wouldn’t come all the way down here?”
Alexis shrugged her shoulders at the lack of logic in her actions; privately amused that that was almost the same thing that Jax had said when she left the penthouse. “I wanted you to see how angry I was. Now why did you call me?” She said sitting down heavily in the chair behind her.
“I need some legal advice.”
“I am not your lawyer.” She said firmly.
“Yeah but you also say that you’re not Sonny’s lawyer.” Luke said grinning.
“I’m not.” She grumbled as she caught the legal papers he threw at her.
“Could ya just look at those?”
“What, are you getting sued by someone who went blind from your unique décor?” She teased as she put on her glasses and started reading the papers, but she stopped short when she read the content of the papers. “Oh.”
“Yeah, ‘oh’, and don’t you even try to give me the ‘How are you doing?’ sympathetic head tilt.” Luke warned comically, brandishing his finger at her.
Alexis sheepishly straightened her neck and smiled sympathetically at Luke. “But really how are you doing?”
Luke shrugged and tried to look like he didn’t care. “It’s been coming for a while Tash. I thought you’d know, since your undead brother is her boyfriend.” Luke finished bitterly.
“Oh, Stefan disowned me again. I thought you kept up on that kind of thing?”
Luke shrugged. “I’ve been out of town. Now would you please translate that crazy lawyer language there and tell me what that says.” Luke said impatiently.
“Okay fine.” Alexis grumbled and started to skim through the legal document. “Well it looks pretty standard. Split the properties, she gets the house, you get the club, she keeps her car, you keep the Cadilac. Though I don’t know why, since you painted it red it just doesn’t have the same flare.” Alexis said still concentrating on the papers.
“I don’t need a commentary.” Luke said frowning as her.
Alexis looked up and said in her most innocent voice, “It says that in here I swear.”
Luke rolled his eyes. “What does it say in there about Lulu?” Luke said with a hint of worry in his voice that didn’t escape Alexis.
“Um…” Alexis skimmed some more and found the part she was looking for. “Standard joint custody with a schedule to be worked out later by you and Laura.” Alexis took off her glasses and looked at Luke questioningly. “Why would you be worried about that? Laura doesn’t seem like the type that would try to keep your child from you.”
“No she wouldn’t do that to me, but Stuffin would in a heartbeat. And I got Laura a little mad at me this morning, and I don’t know what she might have let Stuffy talk her into.”
“Luke everyone gets mad at you, you should be used to it by now.” Alexis smirked. “But really, she would never let anyone convince her to take Lulu away from you.” She said smiling in a rare moment to kindness towards Luke.
“So what did you do to make Laura so mad?”
“Well I kind of took someone with me when I went to see Lulu.”
“Oh you didn’t bring Felicia, did you? Cause Laura’s been a bit edgy about her…”
“No, it wasn’t Felicia.” Luke said shaking his head; he was a little amused to hear of Laura maybe being a bit jealous. “I brought my daughter.”
Alexis’ face turned into a mask of confusion. “Huh?”
“Well I never thought I’d stump a Cassadine.” Luke said laughing. He decided to explain when Alexis was still starring at him like he’d grown a third head. “It’s a long story…”
“Which I don’t need to know.” Alexis said cutting him off.
“Right. And the jist is a good friend of mine died and left both me and her daughter with the revelation that she’s my daughter.”
Alexis thought about that for a minute. “How old is your newfound daughter?” She asked just because she couldn’t actually contemplate Luke cheating on Laura.
“She’s 22. Her mom and I were only together for one night and it was before I even came to Port Chuck. I’ve been Dani’s godfather since she was five, and I’ve tried to be a part of her life since then. I never had any idea she was my daughter.” Luke said sadly. He didn’t know what he would have done if he had known, but right now his whole life was filled with regrets and one more wouldn’t hurt.
“So why when she was five?” Alexis asked carefully.
Luke ran his hand through his short hair. “When Grace found out she was pregnant she married a guy named Joe, and told him the baby was his.” Luke said, still angry at Grace for keeping this from him. “Joe died when Dani was five.” Luke stopped short and glared at Alexis. “You and your sneaky lawyer questions got me to tell you more than I was going to.”
Alexis shrugged. “That’s my job Luke.”
“Sneaky lawyer.” Luke grumbled underneath his breath.
“Thank you.” Alexis said smiling proudly. She looked down sadly at the papers she was holding. “So what do you want to do with these?”
“Well what’s next?”
“Well you can contest the divorce and we can go from there or you can sign the papers and I’ll get them to Laura’s lawyer and he’ll process them.”
Luke smirked. “So you are my lawyer.”
Alexis groaned loudly and rolled her eyes. “I am never helping you again!” She said as she got up and angrily and started putting on her coat.
“Natasha wait! I’ll be good.” Luke said getting up from his chair.
Alexis stopped and looked at him doubtfully.
Luke shrugged. “Well I’ll try.”
“I’ll let you know what I want to do about the papers.” Luke said quietly.
“Okay, and if you ever need to talk, you should probably go find a friend.” Alexis said smiling and gave Luke a quick hug and was gone.
Dani sat down at one of the tables outside Kelly’s and closed her eyes. It really had been a long day. Surprisingly she had made it to Kelly’s without getting lost. She had ordered the chili that Bobbie had wanted, and went outside to wait for it. Her mind drifted to Luke’s suggestion, and she couldn’t help but be intrigued by it. Luke really did need help, she had stopped to talk to Claude on her way out of the club, and he said that he had told Luke that he would stay on until Luke found a replacement out of respect, but Claude was really hoping that Luke found someone fast. The band Claude was managing was going on tour soon and there was a lot to do. As much as she wanted to help Luke out she also loved running the club in Florida. She was good at it and she would want to do it again. But there was also the question of independence; she didn’t want to be dependent on Luke. But wasn’t that what families did for each other? Depend on each other and help each other? Dani groaned, she really wasn’t used to having much of a family. It had always just been her and her mom. Dani was saved from those sad thoughts by the waitress bringing out her order.
She got up to leave but something distracted her.
“Jason, why won’t you listen to me? Let me explain!”
“Carly there’s nothing to explain. Why can’t you just stop this now while there’s still a chance that someday we could be friends again.” Jason opened the door to Kelly’s and walked in before Carly could say another word.
Carly swore under her breath and kicked the wall in anger and frustration. “Your little chicky isn’t even working today!” She yelled at the closed door.
She whirled around angrily and frowned when she saw Dani looking at her curiously. “What are you staring at?” Carly said defensively.
Dani smiled. “You must be Caroline.”
“Who are you?” Carly asked, narrowing her eyes suspiciously.
“Well I guess I’m your cousin.”
"What!? As far as I know I have two cousins. A four year old who doesn't talk much and a guy named Sly who no one's heard from in years." Carly said looking Dani over in suspicion.
Dani smiled, she kinda liked keeping Carly guessing. "Actually Lulu's five."
"Oh, and I'm sure you're just the expert on Lulu." Carly smirked.
"Well I am her sister." Dani said casually, enjoying the shocked look on Carly's face.
A devious little smile crossed Carly's face as she came to a conclusion. "So big bad Uncle Luke has a secret daughter." She said laughing to herself.
"Well he did just find out about me yesterday Caroline, cut him some slack."
"Why do you keep calling me that?" Carly said irritably.
"It is your name isn't it?" Dani said smiling innocently.
"Yeah, but the only person who ever calls me that is Luke, and he just does it to annoy me." Carly grumbled.
"If you haven't noticed, he does that kind of thing to everybody. He takes pleasure in knocking people off their game and unnerving them. It must run in the family." Dani smirked.
Carly rolled her eyes. "No, I think he just does it cause he doesn't like me."
"You know Luke does care about you, he just doesn't show it like normal people, which I think he is actually proud of." Dani said thoughtfully.
"Oh, and how do you know that?" Carly said doubtfully.
"He told me." Dani said smiling. "And from what I've heard, you are just like Bobbie was when she was younger. But don't tell Luke I told you cause he'll probably kill me."
Carly let out a laugh and then tried to cover it by looking suspicious again. "So I'm guessing you're the 'someone I want you to meet' that Bobbie was talking about. Something about a family dinner?"
"Yeah that's me, you're new cousin." Dani held up the bag with the chili in it. "And here's part of dinner that I should get back to the brownstone."
"Well you know my name, but I still don't know yours."
Dani held out her hand to Carly. "Dani Edwards, nice to meet you."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If someone asked me who I was I responded in terms of us It’s so hard to recall the day When I didn’t think that way I was one half of you and me That was my identity
Luke sat at his desk holding the picture of Laura that he had always kept there. Her golden hair was shining like the sun and her smile was just for him. That’s how it had always been, that smile had always been for him and only for him. And as much he wanted to hold onto that feeling, hold onto her, if this was what she wanted he really couldn’t stop her. Not that he could ever deny her anything anyway. Luke set the picture down gently, almost reverently. He ran his fingers down the smooth glass over Laura’s face. His eyes roamed to the other pictures on his desk. There’s one of Lucky when he was young and beside it was a picture that hadn’t been there when he had left town. He figured that Elizabeth had sneaked in one day and put it there because it looked a lot like the one that Lucky and Nikolas had given Laura for her birthday except that it was just Lucky holding Lulu and both of them smiling bright. He’d have to thank her for that tonight.
Who am I now, now that you’re gone Gotta find out I gotta be strong When I had you I had no doubt I was the one you loved Who am I now?
Laura looked around her house, her house. It wasn’t ‘theirs’ or ‘the Spencers’ or even ‘Luke’s’ or ‘Lucky’s’, it was hers. It seemed so empty without Luke or Lucky there, but it had been that way for a long time now. One of the things that disturbed her most about this afternoon was that at least some of what Dani said was true. She really didn’t know if Luke would have even looked at her twice when Stefan and Nikolas came into town had Lucky and Lulu not been there. And even if she hadn’t thought that, Dani’s statement certainly put that doubt in her mind. The other thing that disturbed her was that she’d actually made the decision to divorce Luke because she was mad. She couldn’t even decide if she was made at Luke or mad at Dani. What in the world happened? She asked herself. When she married Luke she’d been so young and in love. She’d had so many dreams and hopes and expectations. But somehow she ended up here, a mother of three, now two, with a soon-to-be ex-husband.
Every room that I walk through I see a world that‘s based on two’s Every friend I ever knew I wonder now whose friend is whose Like some ghost come though that door Someone we all knew before
Luke closed his eyes; he couldn’t look at those pictures anymore. But then again, they would never go away. It wasn’t just the pictures it was the memories attached to them and the ache in his heart when he thought of it all ending. Words ran through his head; it was Stefan’s fault, it was Helena’s fault, it was Nikolas’ fault, it was Laura’s fault, it was his fault. Maybe all of them were true. Maybe none of them were true. He was tired of blaming everyone. It was just over. At first it scared him that he didn’t think anything could save his marriage. Then it scared him that he didn’t think he wanted to anymore. No that wasn’t true, he would give anything to save his marriage, but that wasn’t what his wife wanted. She wanted an end, and that was what Luke wanted too. He wanted an end to the pain, and he supposed this was as good a way as any to start. Without even thinking he grabbed the papers and signed them quickly, as if pausing even a little would make him stop.
Who am I now, now that you’re gone Gotta find out I gotta be strong When I had you I had no doubt I was the one you loved Who am I now?
Laura walked over to the fireplace and looked at the pictures. Each one held a special and happy memory. Her marriage had been good, and it wasn’t a mistake. All she had to do was think of Lucky and LuLu to know that. But for a second she had doubted it. She’d even thought that the past 18 years shouldn’t have happened. But now she knew that wasn’t true, even after all the pain she’d gone through she wouldn’t trade a minute of it. She might do things a little differently if she had it to do all over again. There were a lot of regrets she had, but Luke wasn’t one of them. Even now, if he’d just reach for her she’d take his hand in an instant. But she knew that would never happen. She didn’t know what Luke wanted, but she knew he didn’t want her. Laura walked to the table where Stefan had left her copy of the divorce papers. She dug a pen out of her purse and put it to the paper ready to sign. In that moment that she hesitated her whole life with Luke flashed before her eyes, all the triumphs, all the joys, and all the mistakes. All the fixable mistakes. And for that one second she thought that maybe they could start over and be together again. She shook her head at the stupid thoughts running through her mind and signed the papers smoothly. Luke wasn’t hers anymore, that’s the way he wanted it.
I will survive But I don’t know how, now that you’re gone Gotta find out I gotta be strong When I had you I had no doubt I was the one you loved Who am I now? Now that you’re gone Gotta find out I gotta be strong When I had you I had no doubt I was the one you loved Who am I now?
