Well, if you were like me in your way of thinking (and
let's hope that you weren't) you may think that the Amazons
first came from South America where the Amazon River flows.
Boy was I wrong!
The Amazons actually originated in an area near the Black
Sea, yes, that is over in the Middle East. Well, how did
the Amazon River get its name then? It was from Amazons in
the Middle East. Now I am confused you say? Read on...
The Amazons are reported to be a strong warrior tribe of
women from Greek mythology. Many people believe they are
based on fact. There is recorded history that the Amazons
did attack Athens. The Amazon River was named after these
Amazons when a group of European explorers encountered a
tribe of warrior women near there in South America.
Here is another interesting fact. Contrary to popular
belief the Amazons from Greek tales did NOT remove one
breast to use their bows. There is consider proof from
greek drawings which show the women with both breasts in
tact. It is speculated that they would have had to bind
their breasts though.
