The Truth about the Amazons

The Truth about the Amazons

Well, if you were like me in your way of thinking (and let's hope that you weren't) you may think that the Amazons first came from South America where the Amazon River flows. Boy was I wrong!

The Amazons actually originated in an area near the Black Sea, yes, that is over in the Middle East. Well, how did the Amazon River get its name then? It was from Amazons in the Middle East. Now I am confused you say? Read on...

The Amazons are reported to be a strong warrior tribe of women from Greek mythology. Many people believe they are based on fact. There is recorded history that the Amazons did attack Athens. The Amazon River was named after these Amazons when a group of European explorers encountered a tribe of warrior women near there in South America.

Here is another interesting fact. Contrary to popular belief the Amazons from Greek tales did NOT remove one breast to use their bows. There is consider proof from greek drawings which show the women with both breasts in tact. It is speculated that they would have had to bind their breasts though.
