Tip: To get an animal you must have one patch(3x3 square) of grass. to get a cow I reccomend having two ready.  After your first chicken never BUY another chicken just incubate their eggs.

Chickens: These are good for when you are just starting to get livestock. They cost 1000$. Each egg they produce is worth 50$ or 75$ if you sell it to the peddler, if you get enough you'll start getting a bunch of money.Still, cows are alot better. If you incubate an egg it will take around 5 days to hatch into a chick, (you don't have to feed chicks) and then after 7 days they become a full grown chicken.

Cows: Cows require lots of care, To get good milk you should brush, talk to and feed the calves and cows everyday. Cows are way better than chicken moneywise, they cost 5000$ for a calf like the one on the left, in 21 days it will be grow and be able give milk(they'll look like the cow on the right) keep on being kind to them they will give milk worth 350$ for 1 bottle, Get 4 or more cows to get rich easy.
