Harry Thyssen has been supposedly dead for six years, but his daughter Rachel, sees him in a London street. McGill sees the story in the newspaper, and contacts Rachel. Harry was his boss in the CIA before he was thrown out. He is the only man who can clear McGill’s name. Despite being tailed by agents from both East and West, McGill is desperate to find Harry, as he knows that this may be his only chance to salvage his reputation.

A young boy is kidnapped for ransom from an English village. The boy’s father is a wealthy businessman living in London. As the son is a result of an affair, he is desperate that his wife doesn’t find out. He hires McGill to find the boy. When he arrives in the village, McGill finds the locals unfriendly and uncooperative with a total stranger, who they feel has no right to interfere in their business.

McGill is hired by a wealthy businessman Mr Mandel who is having trouble controlling his daughter. She is fast becoming a playgirl and is associating with a couple of con men. But the two men take things a little too far when they steal $20,000 from the safe in her father’s villa. McGill's task is to try and expose the con men to the daughter.

Lord Gormond hires McGill to keep an eye on his son Tim, who seems determined to kill himself. Tim blames himself because his best friend Danny Martin, who after a heavy drinking session, fell to his death off the Albert Bridge. McGill digs deeper and finds out that there was a cover up over Danny’s death.

During a jewellery robbery in Rome, the owner disturbs the burglar and is killed. McGill arrives in Rome shortly afterwards and is visited by local informer Mori, who knows who did it. McGill goes to the insurance company and asks for a reward if he recovers the jewels. Mori approaches the thief, with a deal to buy them. At their meeting, McGill accidentally blows Mori's cover, and the thief escapes having already handed over the jewels. Later, after being hunted down by the thief Mori refuses to tell him where he has hidden them, and is killed. Now believing that McGill is the only one who knows where they are hidden, the thief sets out after him.

McGill is lured to the country, by the offer of a job. When he arrives he is drugged and held prisoner by a deposed President of a small African country, who blames McGill for his downfall. Despite his pleas of innocence, he is tortured by his captors who will stop at nothing to get him to sign a confession.

Max Stein, a Russian friend of McGill, has stolen a million dollars and hidden it in a safety deposit box in a Lisbon bank. Max is shot by someone who is after the money. McGill travels to Portugal on a freighter, using false identity papers. Whilst on board,  he is wounded by a group of sailors. On arrival in Lisbon,  he is put in contact with a local girl who patches him up. He recovers the money from the bank, but when he comes out, he is surrounded by American agents.
