Jessie looked around her hospital room. "What happened? What's going on?" she demanded. James was sitting by her bed. He took her hand, "You're in the hospital again, Jess." She looked at him sadly and then dropped her head back on her pillow. "Not again," she sighed, "I
hate this!" "Well, then I guess you're not gonna be too thrilled with this either," James began. "What?" Jessie asked concerned. "They're gonna put an iv in you," he slowly said. Jessie's face turned pale. "What?!" she screamed. "No, no! I'm fine!" she assured. She flipped off her bed covers, swung her feet around to the floor, and stood up. She then collapsed again, but James caught her. Jessie sighed sadly, as James helped her back to her bed and covered her up. "So I have to get an iv, huh? How fun will that be?" Jessie commented. "Is that ok?" James asked cautiously. "No! But what choice do I have?" she answered. "Are you ok with needles?" he asked her. Jessie looked at him questioningly. "What exactly does an iv entail?" she asked sternly. "Well," James began to explain, "They take a needle, an feed a little tube through one of your veins, and then pump medication through the tube." "Are you serious?" Jessie asked him. "So, uh, are you ok with needles?" he asked again. "No! I hate them! I can't stand them! But I can tough it out…...I think." she responded bravely. "I'll be in there with you," James offered. "I think you'll have to be," Jessie smiled, "If only to keep me from running away!"

Cassidy was pacing the hallway, when James ran into her. "James? Is she ok? Well, I know she's not ok. But will she be? I didn't even know anything was wrong! I should have! Why didn't she tell me?" she franticly asked him. "She didn't want
anyone to know. It was nothing personal," James told her. "I guess I can accept that," Cassidy nodded, "But she has to get better!" "She will, Cass, she will," James assured her. "We're going to start now," the doctor, that had just walked up, told James. "You'll be ok out here?" James asked her. "Yeah," she told him, "Go with Jessie, she needs you." James nodded and followed the doctor into her room. Jessie was flipping out. She apparently had a big problem with needles and this whole thing. "James?" she asked scared, "What are they doing to me?" James came to her side and held the one hand of hers they weren't working on. "We're just prepping it," the nurse told her. The more they began to do, the more Jessie began to freak. Soon she was almost hyperventilating. "Jessie! It's ok! Settle down!" James said, trying to calm her down. Stilling breathing short, Jessie looked up at him. "I-can't! I'm-try-ing!" she managed to get out. "Ok, here we go," the doctor said as he readied the needle. Jessie gasped for air. She winced as the needle broke her skin. She screamed in pain as the line continued to feed inside her vein. James tried to restrain her as gently as possible. She began breathing very quickly, and very shallowly. The people told her to calm down, and she tried. But she could still feel the plastic tubing pushing through her vein. "It's ok, Jess," James tried to assured her. She looked at him, through watery eyes, and shook head violently showing it was not. She screamed again. James couldn't stand to witness her in such pain. "How much longer?" he desperately asked the doctor. "Almost done," the doctor replied evenly. James quickly turned his head back to Jessie's. "It's almost done, Jess," he tried to tell her. She tried to breathe, while she kept her eyes locked on his. "I-I-" Jessie tried to answer but she couldn't talk, the pain was too great. James couldn't take much more. "Aren't you done yet?" he loudly demanded. "Almost done," the doctor replied again. James glared at the man. Jessie continued to try and breathe. "And-we-are-done," the doctor said as he finished. "About damn time!" James angrily thought to himself. He then turned his face back to Jessie's. "You're done, Jess!" he said, kissing her forehead. She smiled at him and then closed her eyes, probably relived. James didn't know who was more relieved that the whole thing was over, her or him.

Jessie woke up in her hospital room, and she looked over at her arm. There was a series of bandages and tape, but she knew what was underneath it all. She felt weak, helpless, and she really hated that. She was really depressed and didn't know what to do. James was going to take care of her, but she didn't know for how long. He would have to get up in the morning, take care of her, got to work, close up shop, come home and then take care of her again. It was a time bomb. Eventually he would become overtired and tried of her. She knew that one of the things he liked so much about her was that she was so independent. And now she had almost lost that. It was only a matter of time. She remembered how they had gotten to where they were now. His emotions had exploded and he had left her. She had never thought of him capable of such rage, what would keep him from doing it again? Should she be sweet all the time or herself? What
was being herself? She wasn't sure that she knew anymore. Maybe she wasn't the same anymore. She still loved him, but did she love him in the same way? And he her? These thoughts brought her to tears. There were too many questions, with too few answers. Just then James walked back in the room. Jessie was still reeling from all her thoughts. "How are you?" he asked quietly. "Oh," she said as she quickly wiped away her tears, "As well as I can." James came and sat by her on the bed. "What the hell else could they do to me?" Jessie asked him. "Do you really want to know?" he asked. "No!" she answered quickly. "Well, you don't have to find out. They're done," James told her. "Yeah, for now," she sighed sadly. Her eyes trailed down and came across the ugly mass on her arm. "When does this damn thing come out?" she said bitterly. "Soon I hope," James answered. Jessie smiled, "Why? You want one of those new cordless girlfriends? They're portable and more durable-!" James leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. "I don't care if you need batteries, I still love you."  As his lips met hers all the previous thoughts melted away, and she was happy once more.
