Homecoming Bummer11/4/98 | ![]() |
A few weeks back was the old Homecoming dance at my high school. Once again I didn’t have a date. I know you’re all surprised but I sure wasn’t. To tell the truth I haven’t been to a school dance all of high school. So I’m actually a little bummed about it. There was the Sadie Hawkins day dance freshman year that I got asked to by Tracy Spalding, but she then had this family trip that came up and she couldn’t go. I would have asked her on a date after that but it turned out the “trip” she was going on was actually to a special school for troubled kids. That would have really sucked, except for the fact that she was kind of strange looking anyway. Like her eyes kind of had this twitch thing going on.
So anyway, like a week before the dance, I find out my best pal Dennis had this date. I couldn’t believe it cause we had just made plans to hold an anti-dance party at his place. So it looked like a night alone for me.
To tell the truth I felt more then a little betrayed, I mean, what a tard. After all the things I had done for him. Like the time I stayed home from the They Might be Giants concert because he couldn’t get a ticket. And I heard that show rocked the house. I don’t think it’s too much to ask.
So that Friday comes around and I go up to him on the bus and tell him how hurt I am. He acts all fake sympathetic right. He tells me we can hang out on Saturday, but he knows that won’t work cause I have swimming lessons that night. So I let him have it. I just couldn’t believe he’d rather go to a stupid dance for gays, with that skank Janice Durkhiem, then hang with his best bud.
Well that was it I figured. I’d have to find a date and fast. I told my mom the dilemma and she said she thinks she knows someone who would go with me. My mom’s friend Blanch new a girl who went to her church that might like the attention. That was fine by me.
My mom made a few calls and it was set. Her name was Kathy and she went to school in another town. I put on one of my Dad’s suits and was ready to go. My Dad said he would drive us, which was cool cause I knew my Mom would just embarrass me to no end. Well we finally get there to Kathy’s house and I was getting pretty worried. I hoped she wasn’t too bad. Well, my Dad honked the horn and we waited in silence for a minute or two. Then, the front door slowly opened. It was Kathy’s Mom. She came up to the car and told me Kathy will not be going with me cause she didn’t finish her homework like she promised.
Man, I was really in the pits at that point. I returned home to wallow in the shame of my life. My Mom felt bad for me so she ordered a pizza with the toppings I like. It made me feel a little better. I just sat around and waited for the show to come on. That always makes my day a little better.
