She's All That...and more2/22/99 | ![]() |
Teen flicks are back in style these days and all I can say is, great. When you don't do anything remotely social except go to the movies, like me, this trend can really brighten your week. The crown jewel of these being, She's All That. For those of you shut-in's who haven't seen it, it stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and the girl from that anti-drug, egg smashing add. And basically Freddie takes a bet to turn nerd egg girl into the prom queen. And he does, falling in love in the process. Now I know most of you think I only like it because of the nerd to popular journey the egg girl makes. But that's only part of it. The main reason I like it is because it's real.
Teens really go to parties, hang out at the beach, and do complex dance numbers. At least that's what Denis told me. And I trust him cause he's gone to those things. And this girl once took a bet to go out on a date with me in junior high. Now we didn't fall in love or anything, but she did win the five bucks. Now if that bet had been to go out for a few weeks, I would have won her over. Heck, Kathy Palmstead and me might still be going out today. The other day I swear I caught her looking at me when I was at my locker. Maybe there's a future for us yet. Keep your fingers crossed readers.
The other aspect that really hit home was the nerd/popular kid conflict. I often find myself the victim of Carson Steel, the most popular kid in school's biting comments. These can be anything from, dorkwad, to geek, to dickless wonder. And I'm a sensitive guy, I'm not afraid to cry ladies. But I would like to not have to do it in phy-ed . My most hated to ed's. I don't think people realize that nerd persecution is the highest it's been since the revenge of the nerds trilogy. I just hope She's All That's shocking exposure of harsh nerd treatment can bring us some relief. These are supposed to be the best years of our lives. I'm sick of "group wedgies" and "thermal de-pantsings." And I have a feeling that most of America feels the same way. So go see She's All That, because all that, is what the movie is too.
