Thinking out loud while wondering what the hell happened to Lois Lane.

Looking Back,Moving Ahead (random acts of thinking)(posted 9 January 2K): Well,we're still here. The computers didn't cause the world to end at midnight. If it was the case,I'd be back home in Ohio in a radio studio making out with the galpal. Anyway 1999 in Pittsburgh media was very interesting to say the least. I had some thoughts on what happened and what will happen for 2000. So without further adieu....; Mix 96.1:AMFM/Clear Channel do us a huge favor and put Mix out to pasture. How about a format that will work on 96.1. Wait a minute,I have one...what about a Hot Talk format that can be anchored by the ousted morning duo of Bender and Jackie (via ISDN from Virginia). Gotta say that karma is a bitch for Mix 96.1. The PD stated that the station would land a 5 share at years' end. Funny,because you're only a few points away from being tied with WORD-FM and Froggy 94.9 for the doghouse.; WDVE-FM: You really gotta pull for Jim Krenn as he leads the morning show in the 2K and beyond. Just gotta wonder if one certain morning show JohnDaveBubbaShelly on B-94 will launch a strike against the show. They're probably the only ones who could topple DVE's morning dominance on the FM,giving Infinity a 1-2 punch in the mornings along with Cigna on KDKA.; ESPN Radio 1250:So far so good. It'd be really nice if you got some counter-balance to Mark Madden's blustering. We know that you have Savaran in the evenings,but if your sister station ESPN 1000 can have 2 guys doing afternoon sports,what's stopping 1250 from getting a partner for Bigg Sexxxy? Oh,btw for those of you whining that ESPN Radio rarely takes any calls on the national shows. If you're a sports fan who's broadminded and loathes every call made about the Steelers in the off-season,you switch the dial in a flash. WFAN-AM usually gets the perpetual NY whining and ergo it wouldn't look good for 1250.; WPTT-AM 1360:Do I Think that Boywer would do well in the AM? yes and no...He's an acquired taste. Makes you long for Dmitri again. (Can you imagine Uncle Dougie having a field day if Dmitri comes back to Pittsburgh radio?; KDKA-AM:Cut your losses and reduce Thor Tolo's show to an hour or so. Better yet,let Tolo go... Bring in a counter show,namely Rick Emerson or Ed Tyll. If you have to keep a sports show in the PM,get Jim Rome or The Sports Babe on tape-delay. Tolo will basically be Mark Madden's ratings bitch as long as Madden's at Ardmore Blvd.; WWSW-AM 970:If you don't make 96.1 a talk station,how about bringing it here? I seriously don't think that Clear Channel would want to waste a good AM Frequency in Pittsburgh if it's simulcasting the FM.; The Pax TV Mess:Well,the saying goes that if you made the mess,you've gotta clean it up. My only question is why would Pittsburgh need 2 public TV stations owned by the same group?
The other thing was that couldn't WQED have done any amount of cost-cutting? I guess not. But it does appear that WQED may have gotten themselves out of one mess and into another.
WQED sold WQEX-TV to Cornerstone Television who then sold WPCB-TV to Paxson Communications. When the dust settles,WQED will be the only public station in Pittsburgh,Cornerstone gets an educational station to work with and Paxson gets a Pittsburgh station. Somehow,it all appears to be a bigger mess.
As expected,a local group has raised objections to the deal citing the intolerance of Cornerstone Television. They want the FCC to block the sale and award Channel 16 to a new group that would operate it as a community station.
Somehow,the FCC did approve the sale...it does look like that it could get very ugly before the sun comes out.
WQED made its own mess and it should clean it up itself. If the station had to sell WQEX to the University Of Pittsburgh or Duquense University,that should have been done in the first place. Cornerstone's biggest problem is the image of christian intolernace and that's the objection of the groups against WQED.
It's not going to look pretty at the end,stay tuned...
