One Man's take on the Pittsburgh radio-TV market....
The other thing was that couldn't WQED have done any amount of cost-cutting? I guess not. But it does appear that WQED may have gotten themselves out of one mess and into another.
WQED sold WQEX-TV to Cornerstone Television who then sold WPCB-TV to Paxson Communications. When the dust settles,WQED will be the only public station in Pittsburgh,Cornerstone gets an educational station to work with and Paxson gets a Pittsburgh station. Somehow,it all appears to be a bigger mess.
As expected,a local group has raised objections to the deal citing the intolerance of Cornerstone Television. They want the FCC to block the sale and award Channel 16 to a new group that would operate it as a community station.
Somehow, the FCC did approve the sale...it does look like that it could get very ugly before the sun comes out.
WQED made its own mess and it should clean it up itself. If the station had to sell WQEX to the University Of Pittsburgh or Duquense University, that should have been done in the first place. Cornerstone's biggest problem is the image of christian intolernace and that's the objection of the groups against WQED.
It's not going to look pretty at the end, stay tuned...
