One Man's take on the Pittsburgh radio-TV market....
I wonder how long will it take before the FCC puts the nail on WCVI-AM and WPQR-FM? WCVI's supposed to be off the air,but they have been broadcasting illegally. The staff had to fend for themselves as the owner remains incognito. Supposedley,he had filed for bankruptcy, but it appears to be a mess no matter how you look at it.
WPQR-FM has been airing nothing but dead air.Plans were afoot to bring the station back with a regular format, but alas...it never came to be. It wouldn't shock me that if these properties were forced to be sold,to settle the financial debt, the ownership has endured.I also wouldn't be shocked if a proposed owner buys WPQR-FM with an eye to move the station closer to Pittsburgh.
I copped a letter a recent Saturday P-G sports section (apart from the usual whines about the Steelers and Penguins) about a listener wishing that the local sports radio hosts were more civilized than what currently passes for sports radio. The writer felt that Mark Madden (ESPN Radio 1250) and Thor Tolo (KDKA) were more concerned with themselves than with actual sports talk. I've got news for ya. There's a line from The Kinks'"No More Looking Back" that goes: No More Looking Back,No More Livin' In The Past, Yesterday's Gone and That's A Fact,Now There's No More Looking Back."
This can be adapted to the state of sports radio in Pittsburgh.
Everyone wishes that they can have sports talk can be like the old days, but this is an age where you have to entertain people and not bore people half to death. Many oldtimer Pittsburgh sports fans may not like it,but it is the truth. Surely Madden and Tolo do entertain and their numbers prove it,but for those of you who have to fire off a missive to the sports editor about a radio host's Kordell bashing antics,i've got a simple solution for you-turn the radio dial to another channel. Simple as that.
Wave goodbye to WOGI-FM and its home city of Charleroi,Pa. The station did file an application to move its COL to Duquesne,Pa. Thousand dollar question, can a format like Froggy find favor with Pittsburgh ears? Can the station be relevant to Pittsburgh listeners as it is to Uniontown/Charleroi listeners?
Tune in and find out....When Keymarket insisted that they wouldn't target Y108,it was kind of a backhanded entry into Pittsburgh and WOGI-FM's move to the Mon Valley proves it.
