Britain's most popular sitcoms of all time - Auf Wiederdehen, Pet.
Auf Wiedersehen, Pet attracted 13.4 million viewers during the height of its popularity in UK during February 1984. A show that could have been called The Likely Lads go to Germany, it was created, like that great comedy classic by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet related to the misadventures of three Geordies from the north-east of England who, obliged by local unemployment in Tynside, made the short trip across the North Sea to a Dusseldorf building site. The three Geordies were philosophical Denis (played by Tim Healy), anxious Neville (Kevin Whatley) and a slobbish Oz (former night-club singer and ex-convict Jimmy Nail). They were joined en-route by Cockney Casanova, Wayne (Gary Holton), an ex-boxer from Bristol, Bomber (Pat Roach), boring Brummie Barry played by Timothy Spall and pock-faced Liverpudlian plasterer (and arsonist!) Moxy (Christopher Fairbanks).
A total of 26 episodes were aired over two seasons (1983-86), the first set in a building site in Germany, the second set in Britain and Spain. Although the first series actually reflected early eighties concerns about unemployment, it was ultimately a study in Britishness, with the confines of the Dusseldorf accommodation hut - in which most of the action took place - acting as a sort of comic intensifier. During the second series the Magnificent Seven went to work - not exactly willingly - for Tynside gangster, Ally Fraiser (played by Bill Paterson), first on a Derbyshire conversion for one of Ally's pal's and then on his villa on Spain's Costa del Crime. During filming of the second series, actor Gary Holton who played the girl chasing Wayne died of a drink-and-drugs cocktail, his demise removing a vital screen presence (despite some adroit use of a double, which made Wayne seemingly a part of every episode). In recognition of Holton's contribution, the rest of the cast refused a third series, provisionally set in Moscow.
