the classic BBC TV Comedy series Are
You Being Served? - well are you?
Are you
being served? is the show that made John Inman a
household name with his catch phrase, I'm Free! It probably did
more for the gay lobby in the 70's than any other initiative I
can think of!! Are you being
served? is a classic BBC TV Britcom series now enjoying re-runs on UK Gold on the Astra satellite and
for me it seems funnier second time around. The show was launched
in 1972 in black and white and featured the Grace Brothers
Department Store. For 25 years, the Gentlemens
Ready-to-Wear Department has occupied the third floor of the
store. Now they are reorganizing the store and the floor must be
shared with Ladies Separates and Underwear. Mr
Grainger, played by Arthur Brough,
as head of the Gentlemens
Ready-to-Wear Department locks horns with the head of the Ladies
Separates and Underwear, Mrs. Slocombe,
played by Mollie Sugden.
The day is saved with the appointment of a Ladies and Gents
Floorwalker, Captain Peacock, played
by Frank Thornton
who is the link between the staff and management and can't really
decide which "camp" he's in!
In spite of the initial hostility between Mr. Grainger and Mrs.
Slocombe the junior sales staff generally get on well with
each other and Captain Peacock is
not adverse to banging heads when the situation calls for it. The
story moves on to include other parts of the department store,
special events are organised by the management, Mr. Rumbold played by Nicholas Smith,
who tries to bolster flagging sales with all sorts of weird and
wonderful schemes. The show features the comic talents of John Inman as Wilberforce ("I'm Free") Humphries
the comedy thrives on innuendo and double meanings which in the
70's was thought a tad risky by some. Now we can enjoy the show
for what it really is - a bit of harmless fun which is, after
all, all in the mind of the viewer.
Are you being served? is a
true classic, still popular 25 years after it first appeared on
British television. The pilot episode appeared in 1972 and
brought the two hitherto separate departments together for the
first time. A total of ten series followed between 1973 and 1984
(none in 1980) with Christmas Specials in 1976, 1979 and 1981. In
total some 65 episodes and specials were shown on the BBC and
whilst no more will be made, new viewers can catch re-runs on
satellite and PSP stations for many years to come hopefully.
