Welcome to a web site dedicated to providing you
original Windows 95/98 Desktop Themes for you to download and
enjoy. This page is my tribute to a wonderfully funny and
entertaining comedy starring Dawn
French as the Vicar
of Dibley.
The Vicar of Dibley is another in a long line of successful BBC TV sitcoms. Featuring the ample comic talents of Dawn French, one half of the well established comedy duo, French and Saunders, Dawn plays the new female Vicar, Reverend Geraldine Granger who arrives in Dibley as the new Vicar. The villagers find Geraldine a bit of a surprise and she is not entirely welcome! Once established, the villagers take their new Vicar to their hearts none more so than the Vicarage housekeeper, Alice Tinker (the funniest character in the whole show in my book) and each episode brings with it a new opportunity for Geraldine to right a wrong or discover more of the villager's of Dibley. Each show features a closing joke which uniquely adds to the fun and stamps Dawn's comic genius on this delightful series.
Produced by Jon Plowman and written in the main by Richard Curtis (Black Adder, Four wedding and a funeral), the characters in this show are as strong as any the BBC have delivered in recent years. Emma Chambers, plays Alice Tinker the young, rather "slow" housekeeper who's devoted duty it is to look after the Vicar. She is the dotty element in the show although she will tell you that it's her sister who's not all there! Gary Waldron plays the local gentry type David Horton, an ex-army type; into all the committees who can be relied upon to provide the judging at the local village fete. James Fleet plays David's timid son, Hugo Horton, who eventually finds true love with Alice Tinker although love takes a long time to blossom when the shy meets the dim. Roger Lloyd Pack (Trigger from Only Fools and Horses) plays the local farmer Owen Navitt, a gentle kindly man who's foul language is for ever getting him to trouble with the Vicar. Other fine performances are provided by Trevor Peacock as Jim Trott, Liz Smith as Letitia Crapley and John Bluthal as Frank Pickle.
The Vicar of Dibley is a relative newcomer to the long list of comic hits notched up by the BBC. First appearing on the 11th October 1994, there have been two six-part series in 1994 and 1998 with an Easter Special in 1995 and Christmas specials in 1996 and 1997. Whether there will be more of this fine comedy to come time will tell - I personally think it would be a tragedy to discontinue such a winning formula as The Vicar of Dibley
