Created and written by Victoria Wood, Dinnerladies is another recent hit comedy show for the BBC.  Victoria Wood, whose stage and screen career has spanned two decades, is a household name and institution in Britain, yet she is virtually unknown in the US.  In the UK she is perhaps best known as a stand-up comedian,  where her stand-up routine has been dubbed "cellulite and shopping". She is also an accomplished pianist and comic song writer/performer with a particularly engaging style to her witty songs.  Victoria Wood  has won five BAFTAs and a host of other awards and therefore penning Dinnerladies has been something of a new venture for Victoria Wood.

In this her first sitcom for the BBC, Bren (Victoria Wood) is a dinnerlady in the works canteen of HWB Components. Everyone is a "character" in the true sense of the word but like much of Victoria Wood's work, there is poignancy in the laughs, especially when her mad mother Petula (played by frequent collaborator Julie Walters) occasionally drops in.  A nice little workplace comedy, although if it were as easy as it looks, everyone could do it.   Her fellow dinnerladies include Dolly (Thelma Barlow), Jean (Anne Reid), Twinkle (Maxine Peake) and Anita (Shobna Gulati).   Canteen Manager Tony is played by Andrew Dunn and other regulars include Stan the handyman (Duncan Preston) and HR Manager Philippa (Celia Imrie)

... the staff of HWB Compnents Canteen.

The show appeared on British television in 1998 for an initial series of 8 episodes. A second 8-episode series was screened in 2000 and we hear more could be on the way.  Don't hold your breath though, Victoria Wood is not one to dine out on a winning formula for too long before wringing the changes.  With luck we will see a third series later this year or maybe a Christmas Special!

A year earlier (1997) on Radio 4, six episodes of a little known radio comedy drama appeared which has a distinct connection with our featured comedy this month.

The first person who can give me the name of the radio show, the name of the writer and the name of the institution in which the drama was set will receive a CD-ROM containing all the Desktop Themes featured at this website.

Despite its relative short history there are one or two sites appearing on the web indicating more than a passing interest in this comedy series.  Here are few of these to wet your appetite. If you find others please let me know - I will add them here for subsequent visitors to explore.
