This page features our Xmas 2000 present to theme lovers everywhere, based on a classic BBC comedy by the writers of Dad's Army, we of course refer to - It Ain't Half Hot Mum.

From the pens of Jimmy Perry and David Croft, It Ain't Half Hot Mum concerns the misadventures of a Royal Artillery concert party in India during the Second World War. Most of the humor comes from the efforts of blustering Welsh Regimental Sergeant-Major Williams (Windsor Davies) to install in the effete entertainers some semblance of military order. On parade with Williams was the assorted platoon of diminutive Gunner "Lofty" Sugden, played by Don Estelle, Bombardier Soloman, played by George Leyton, Scottish Gunner Mackintosh, Stuart McGugan, Gunner Parkin (Christopher Mitchell) - Williams thought he was the boy's father and frequently complemented him on his fine pair of shoulders, Gunner (aka La-de-dah) 'Paederuski' Graham (John Clegg) also doubled up as the pianist whilst Gunner Beaumont played by Melvyn Hayes cross-dressed into Gloria in cabarets for the troops.

The idiotic public school commissioned officers were played by Donald Hewlett as Colonol Reynolds and Michael Knowles as Captain Ashwood. Finally, the local wallahs featured a blacked up Michael Bates as Ragi Ram whose stereotyped pidgin English suggested that the show - which climbed to No. 2 in the BARB ratings,- might have been better titled It Ain't Half Racist Mum.

The show appeared on British television between the years 1974-81 and 56, 30min episodes were shown. Since then it has largely been buried principally I would guess due to the shows lack of political awareness. It was shown recently on UK Gold (satellite comedy re-runs and the nearest UK has to PBS in the states, but with adverts!) where it has developed its own cult following. The show did spin off a hit single "Whispering Grass" performed by actors Windsor Davies and Don Estelle in their Lofty and RSM Williams personae. It got to No. 1 in 1975.
