The League of Gentlemen were conceived at Leeds University where writer, Jeremy Dyson met up with writer/performers, Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith who were studying drama at Bretton Hall College of the Performing Arts near Wakefield, Yorkshire. Whilst conceived in Leeds it's first delivery was at London's Canal Cafe Theatre in 1995. A year later the quartet took their show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and returned in 1997 to win the Perrier Award - the first time it had been won by a sketch-based show since the Cambridge Footlights in 1981.

The BBC spotted the talent at the Edinburgh Festival and soon afterwards delivered the first BBC Radio 4 series, On the Town with the League of Gentlemen. Produced by BBC producer Sarah Smith, the show won a Sony Silver award for radio comedy in 1998 and a Talkie Award for Best Audio Comedy. Spurned on by this success, the BBC commissioned the first television series, The League of Gentlemen, which aired in January 1999. The series won the Golden Rose at the Montreaux Television Festival in April 1999. It also won a Royal Television Society award for best entertainment in 1999. Recently it received a BAFTA award for comedy. The second series aired in January/February 2000 and there is talk of a Christmas Special, a live stage tour, a book and possibly a third series in 2001. Watch this space.
