- Open All Hours .
Open All Hours is a true comedy classic! Created by Roy Clarke, Open All Hours is the BBC's situation comedy from the 70's and 80's set in a Yorkshire corner shop, which opened as a 1974 Comedy Playhouse and received it's first run on BBC2, where it picked up only modest custom! A repeat on BBC1 in 1979, however, took it to the very pinnacle of the ratings.
Ronnie Barker starred as the stammering, scrooge-like shopkeeper Arkwright who, in between counting his money, bullied his daydreaming assistant, nephew Gr-Gr-ranville, played by a young David Jason. Arkwright lusted after, big-bosomed, Morris Minor driving Nurse, Gladys Emmanuel ("Lynda Baron"). To counter the rising tide of supermarkets, Arkwright opened his shop first thing in the morning until last thing at night, and conned his customers into buying goods they did not want. In the words of Gr-Gr-Granville - I can feel another Sales Drive coming on..... Among his regulars in the shop were Mrs. Featherstone (played by Stephanie "Waiting for God" Cole).
Heavily dependant on seaside postcard-type laughs, and always crucially dependant on Barker's performance as Arkwright, the series was tailor made for Barker (it was originally tried out in Barker's Seven of One show), and he was never s-s-s-short of superb. A total of 25 shows were aired between 1976 and 1985 on BBC1/BB2. The format was sold to America as Open All Night (1981-82) with George Dzundrza as Gordon Feester, the owner of a Californian "364" store.
Links to other Open All Hours Web sites!
Maybe it's a sign of the show's generous age but there are but a few Open All Hours links on the net. Here is what I have found. If you find other links please let me know - I will add them here for subsequent visitors to explore.
Perhaps the best of them - Arkwright's Emporium.
