This is Theme 26 so if you have missed any of the earlier themes be sure you visit the rest of the website before leaving - click on Frames or No Frames to access the main menu. This web page represents my attempt to recapture some of the humour and fun that this great BBC comedy show delivered to the small screen - we give you Steptoe and Son.

Steptoe and Son is arguably one of the BBC's best loved comedy classics. Written by the successful comedy writers that brought us Hancock, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, it's appeal is strangely timeless. For some of us who remember the original shows (now that's giving it away!) the re-runs on UK-Gold of late have brought back many happy memories of the antics of perhaps the worlds best known rag and bone men - Steptoe and Son.

Steptoe senior, Albert Steptoe is played by Wilfred Brambell - the one known to millions of us as "...dirty old' man!". He has been in the business all his life - you may not be aware but Albert is the Son referred to on the double yard gates where years earlier Albert's father dabbed in large white lettering Steptoe and Sons - Scrap Merchants. Albert's son, Harold, played by Harry H. Corbett is now well into his 40's. Harold is desperate to leave the rag and bone business in search of the exotic and trendy lifestyle of the rich and famous. With a father like Albert to look after - some hope!. Perhaps the original pre-qual to Only Fools and Horses, these two totters used their horse and cart to collect peoples rubbish (Rag and Bone) in the hope of someday finding something they could turn to a profit - sounds familiar? The story line was picked up by John Sullivan in the hit TV comedy Only Fools and Horses. There is perhaps another rather tenuous link that connects these two shows. After Steptoe and Son had finished Wilfred Brambell appeared in an episode of Citizen Smith as a lift attendant in which he played a character not unlike that of his now famous portrayal of Albert Steptoe. That episode was entitled Only Fools and Horses and is said to have inspired John Sullivan on to create the show we now all know and love as Only Fools and Horses.

Harold and Albert....

Made more than 20 years ago, this series of comedy shows has retained its rightful place in the BBC's top ten comedy series of all time. Steptoe and Son started out life as a Galton and Simpson Comedy Playhouse presentation which was screened on January 5 1962 entitled The Offer. Made in black and white, the first series of 5 shows followed shortly afterwards in June/July 1962. Further B&W series followed in 1963, 1964, 1965. This could have been the end of Steptoe and Son had it not been for the BBC which pursued Galton and Simpson to re-launch the show in colour in the early 70's. A further four series were made in colour and shown in 1970 (March/April), 1970 (November/December), 1972 (February/April) and 1974 (September/October). In addition there were two Christmas specials shown in 1973 and 1974 together with two rather unmemorable films entitled Steptoe and Son (1972) and Steptoe and Son Ride Again (1973). Wilfred Brambell, who played the part of Albert, died in 1985 at the age of 73. Tragically, Harry H. Corbett died three years earlier in 1982 of a heart attack, aged only 51. We are, therefore, very fortunate to have such comedy classics survive which will bring much happiness to all Steptoe and Son fans new and old.
