The Rift

part 10

The Bard must have caught Callisto off guard because before she could react, Melissa had her little bard hands wrapped tightly around the Goddess' throat. The momentum of the collision carried the two over backward and Callisto's head struck the ground - hard.

Ok ok, that didn't happen. But it wasn't for lack of wanting on the part of the bard. In reality the Goddess sucker punched Melissa in the face and she dropped like, well, like a bard who has just been punched in the face by a Goddess. It wasn't pretty, it just was.

GC: (kneeling down next to Melissa) (gently strokes the bard's face with the back of her and then slaps her - hard.) Wake up.

MM: (flinch)(blink)(flinch again) W-wh-what happened?

GC: I'll tell you what happened you tried to kill me, that's what.

MM: (sitting up) (rubbing the side of her face) I can't kill you Callisto, you're an immortal. Besides this is Ilusia, remember?

GC: That's suppose to make me feel better? ... Hey, did you just call me Callisto?

MM: So what if I did? Sometimes you can be so frustrating!

FRUSTRATING! Echoes through the room.......

MM: Can't you see we have a bigger problem! [echoes] Like getting out of here! [echoes]

GC & MM: (cringe) (cover their ears)

MM: What's going on? (whispers) Who's doing that?

GC: (frown) we are. Or I should say YOU are! Why can't you ever just shut-up?! [echoes]

MM: here you go again! [Echoes] You're always blaming me for everything! ["Blame" echoes ] Goddess, why is it never your fault?! [Echoes]

GC: Because it's usually YOURS! [Echoes]

MM: (thinking) It's the past! [Echoes] Each time we accuse each other about the past [echoes], the echoes start [echoes].

GC: really? (evil grin)

MM: You've got to tell me how you feel [echoes]! Right now! Nothing about the past-- right now [echoes]!

GC: (beg)(deep breath)

MM: (eyes widen in horror) Goddess don't!

GC: (SCREAMS)

The reverberation of the echoes drove both the Goddess and her bard to their knees. Melissa, shaking like a leaf, curled herself up into a little ball squeezing her hands over her ears as tightly as she could. And tho she would later deny it an actual whimper escaped the Goddess.

Finally after what seemed an eternity, the screaming echoe stopped.

GC: (peaking up from the ground) so uh bard, perhaps you could tell me how you feel right now. (guilty look)

MM: (still on the ground, shivering) I hurt inside [Echoes stops]! Don't you?

GC: (climbing to her feet) [Sings]:

My heart is hurting beyond words.
The pain is tearing up my soul.
These days have seen my spirit die,
My life propelled out of control.

My wounds lie naked to the world--
My depth of suffering exposed.
This damaged past can never heal
Until this nightmare book is closed.

MM: (blank stare) Sure, mock me why don't you?

GC: What do you expect? (then becomes serious) (crouches down next to the bard, making eye contact with her) This is ridiculous, Melissa. I have no reason to be mad at you. Much less to hate you. Don't you know that?

MM: (tears forming)

Gene: (materializes)

MM: Gene, this is really bad timing. Goddess and I are about to make a major break through, the last thing we need is a therapist around.

Gene: sorry but I forgot to mention something. (unrolling a scroll) (ehm) MeeMeeeMeee.

GC: so help me bard, if this turns out to be your dream that we are stuck in....

MM: What if it's yours?

GC: (looks around) can't be...no fire.

Gene: do you two mind?

MM & GC: (look at Gene) (then back at each other?)

MM: but what about all the dark imagery. My dreams are always bright and cheery.

GC: no they're not.

MM: Ok you're right, but...

Gene: (I'm not getting paid enough for this) (disappears)

Gabrielle: (materializes)(muttering something about having to do everything herself)

MM & GC: (look at Gabby) (then back at each other)

GC: but nothing, if it were...

Gabrielle: Callisto! I have something very important to tell you.

GC: ...my dream there would have been flame. I don't even see a...

Gabrielle: It was the bard that lead Xena to Cirra. (vanishes)

MM: (froze)

GC: *churkle*

That can't be good.
