Afterthoughts: Waiting For You
By: Taygeta

Joey gently pulled the blanket to cover Dawson's shoulder, and being a very tired Dawson, he didn't even stir, and hadn't even noticed such a gesture of affection on her part.  She leaned back in her chair, and looked at the serene expression on Dawson's face, which caused a smile of almost relief to fall on Joey's own face as she recollected the chaotic state of affairs the day before.  Never again, did she ever want to go through what she did that day.  Dawson had no idea behind the truth of her usual breezy comments, but he'd find out soon enough and she knew exactly what she was going to hear.  His voice echoed in her mind with a question said far too often and a question that far too many times made sense, "Joey, how could you even think of doing such a thing?!"

Wait until he finds out that his little American Beauty was the main conspirator in this whole affair, thought Joey, but she shook her head and knew that she wouldn't give Dawson, and Jen for that matter, any more conflicts in their absurdity of a romance.  Thinking of Jen, Joey couldn't help but face a question that had shirked through her mind during Jen's conspiracy, was Jen a friend or a foe?  Joey, with her half frown, contemplated the answer readily before she decided with a little bit of guilt on her part, that Jen was never a foe and had indeed tried to be her friend.  She would even go so far as to admit to herself, that perhaps Jen even understood a part of her that Dawson had yet to see and yet to understand, her love for him.

Her eyes fell to his face, again, and she had felt that she had known that face forever.  Yet, Joey understood an aspect of Dawson that even he could only begin to perceive.  She understood his heart, and therefore, she understood Dawson, whose heart possessed his soul more than his mind would ever.  Perhaps her comprehension of his heart caused her to have such a long awaiting hope, and maybe even a prescience of some kind.  It was a hope that in the end he would transgress from his dream world and open his eyes to understand that she had been there all along, just waiting for him to see.

There were so many things that she wanted to just scream out to him, so that he could just open his eyes and look around.  There was so many times that she had come so close to just yelling out that...that she...yet she couldn't help but fall apart every single time.  And yet, through all of her frustrations and all of her anger towards his obliviousness, beneath it lay something so powerful and profound that everything else didn't matter.

Joey carefully brushed a lock of his blonde hair away from his closed eyes, and thought back of a conversation she had had with Jen not too long ago.  In that very conversation, she had told Jen that she would have been stupid enough to wait forever, but now Joey wondered about the amount of stupidity involved.  She shook her head as a soft smile fell on her lips while she glanced at Dawson, and then she realized that no stupidity was involved, just love.
