Afterthoughts: Thoughts of You
By: Taygeta

Dawson made a move to leave the room, but he paused when he heard the sound of Pacey's voice, again, "You can't ignore what's there…you can't just walk away, like you do with everything else.  Face up to your problems Dawson because you're not dealing with a script, anymore…you're not dealing with characters from some movie you're filming.  You're dealing with life, man, and that life includes people… the real kind."

He sighed when he saw his blonde-headed friend walk quickly out of the store without another word.  Standing up, he turned off the TV set in angry wonderment as to why his friend could be so dense!  There was this wonderful…beautiful girl just waiting for him, and what does he go and do, but run towards someone that doesn't even compare.

Moreover, Pacey didn't understand Dawson's obsession with Jen, and as his thoughts turned to their conversation across the creek recently, he muttered, "New and exciting my ass."  At that very moment, he held very little reverence for the blonde from the big and bad city of New York.  The fact that she broke his blubbering buddy's heart gave him cause for his disgust, but another factor added to his feelings of aversion.  Although Jen was a recent intruder into the long history of Dawson and Joey, in Pacey's mind, she had inflicted the most pain between his friends.

Slamming the door promptly, he locked it; thoughts of his day came back to him, and he couldn't believe what a day it had been.  He and Joey had actually succeeded in being in a relationship that could be called friendship, and he had actually become, was, and is attracted to her... so much as to have kissed and despite its outcome, actually like it.  Never in all his years of despising her did he ever think that he would "have the hots for Joey," but this attraction that he acquired, for some reason, didn't seem weird to him.  It felt so natural and so…real, and his feelings caused his thoughts to fade into his remembrance of Tamara and he wondered, was this what she had been telling him about the day she had left.  Had he found someone "his own age" to be in love with? A satisfactory grin crossed his face in the knowledge that he had and he hoped that Tamara would, too…perhaps a little bit more successfully than he was doing right now.

Joey heard the crickets chirping loudly as the night breeze caused a low branch to that tapped gently and rhythmically against the living room window.  Pulling her blanket closer to her neck, she sighed, thinking about everything.  And that everything included Dawson, Jen, the carnival, the marine biology project, and especially, Pacey.  She had been so surprised when he had kissed her, and she had to confess that he was, despite her immediate withdrawal, a good kisser.  She was glad that Pacey understood how she felt about Dawson, but she wondered how he could possibly comprehend something that she didn't even understand herself.

She wondered as she drifted off into another night of uneasy sleeping, how she would have reacted to Pacey if there weren't anything in her heart to stand in her way.  As she thought of this, she smiled slightly, with the knowledge that she would have kissed him back and her thoughts would have definitely been about Pacey, and not about just…someone else.
