with them.
It was January and Capeside was freezing. Joey was over Pacey's new apartment, wrapped in his arms as they sat watching TV. They laughed together, enjoying each other's company. After the show, the news came on. Joey sat up and kissed Pacey's lips gently. When she started to pull away, Pacey grabbed her and pushed her down on the couch, tickling her. Joey's eyes teared with laughter. She couldn't believe she had found such happiness with Pacey Witter.
They finally calmed down and sat back up. Joey glanced at the TV, still laughing, and saw that they were running a story on the teacher who'd slept with her student. It brought back thoughts of a rumor that had floated around Capeside High, one that she had brushed aside until now.
Pacey stared at the TV, also, remembering his own teacher. His Tamara. "Pacey?" Joey interrupted his thoughts. He looked at her and smiled. He was happy now, even though he could never forget Tamara Jacobs. "Yeah, Jo?" "I was just thinking ... remember that rumor that was going around school a while back? About you and Miss Jacobs?" Joey questioned, knowing he did. "Yeah," he answered slowly. He knew what her next question would be. And he had to decide what to tell her.
"Was it true at all?" she asked nervously.
Pacey hesitated for a minute. Then, looking at the floor, he answered softly, "Yes.. it was true. Tamara ... Miss Jacobs and I, we had a relationship." Joey didn't speak for a moment. She had thought he would laugh off her question and tell her not to believe everything she heard. She had never imagined it was true. Then she asked, "Did you sleep with her?" "Yep, I did," Pacey answered bitterly. "Hey, you can even watch it if you want, Dawson caught it all on camera! Now there's a movie night for you!" Realizing he'd just snapped at Joey for no reason, he kissed her cheek, and said, "Sorry, Jo, I shouldn't have said that, you were just asking a question."
Joey processed this, and then her eyes went wide. "Oh my God, you mean, you're the guy with the brown hair and --" "-- the throbbing neck muscles," he finished for her. "Yeah, that's me." "I should, uh, get going," Joey stuttered, grabbing her coat and heading for the door. She walked out the door before Pacey could say anything. He buried his face in his hands, hoping he hadn't just ruined another relationship with a woman he loved.
The next day, Joey returned to Pacey's apartment, and apologized. "I'm sorry, Pace, I shouldn't have run out like that yesterday. I mean, you've had a relationship before, so what? In a way, so have I, so let's jus forget about it, ok?" she said quickly and then waited for Pacey's reaction. Pacey just stared at her. He loved her so much, he just wanted to kiss her passionately right there and then. So he did. Pacey invited her in for some pizza that was on the way, and they sat and laughed together. They held hands across the table, and were content to just talk and joke with each other. *Who would've thought, me and Pacey, making googly eyes at each other!* Joey thought, but she couldn't deny that she was the happiest she'd ever been. They were interrupted by the doorbell. "Must be the pizza guy," Pacey said, getting up. But it wasn't.
"Tamara.." Pacey whispered. Then he noticed what was in her arms. Joey joined him at the door, shocked at who was on the other side. "Hello, Pacey. I'm sorry, I didn't know you had company. Maybe I should come back another day..." Tamara said.
"No, no! Come in. This is, um, my girlfriend, Joey Potter." Tamara and Joey uncomfortably greeted each other. "Pacey," Tamara started, "this is really sort of private..."
"No, Joey can stay. She knows," he explained lamely.
"Pacey, I really don't feel comfortable discussing this matter with other people," she said, tossing a fake smile at Joey.
"Pacey," Joey said, "maybe I should..."
"No! Joey stays."
"Fine, Pacey!" Tamara said annoyed. "I have some news for you." She balanced the baby in her arms. "This is your son."
Pacey felt as if he's just been hit by a train and dropped to the couch.
"What?"
"This is your son, Pacey. His name is Christopher, and he's about a month old."
"Are you sure...I mean, you're sure he's mine?"
"Yes, Pacey, I wasn't with anyone else. And if I were, I wouldn't choose you to take the responsibility." Pacey looked at her, extremely hurt. "Oh, I didn't mean it like that. But you're only 16 years old, Pacey..." "I'm aware of that, thankyou!" Pacey spat, still annoyed at her lack of faith in him. Joey still hadn't said one word.
"May I please hold him?" Pacey asked. "Ok, just be careful," Tamara said as she put Chris in Pacey's arms
"Don't worry, I'd never do anything to hurt my son," Pacey said gently. He looked at the baby in his arms, already falling in love with him. This was his child. He motioned for Joey to come sit next to him. He beamed with pride. "Look, Jo, this is my son. Isn't he beautiful?" he smiled as he looked up at Joey. Joey couldn't help but smile back. Pacey was already so happy with his son.
Tamara could see this, too, and it worried her. It made what she had to do now so much harder. She had convinced herself that she would not be here long, that Pacey would reject her and Chris. But deep down, she should have known he could never do that. She looked on for a few more minutes, as Pacey simply stared lovingly at his baby, and said all the things a new parent does. "He's so perfect... Of course, he is MY son," he laughed with Joey.
"Pacey, um...Chris and I have to leave," Tamara interjected nervously.
"Excuse me?" he looked up, losing his smile.
"I'm sorry, but we have a flight to catch and..." But Pacey interrupted her.
"You're taking him away from me? I've only been with him for 5 minutes!"
"I know, Pacey, but it's starting to hail, and I have to get to the airport."
"NO! You are not taking my son away from me yet! Why did you even bother to come here if you were just going to leave?" Pacey yelled, a thousand angry feelings boiling up inside of him.
"Cuz if I called, you would have wanted to see him anyway, right?"
"You know what I mean, Tamara. Why did you even bother to tell me I had a son, if you were just going to take him?" Pacey exclaimed, standing up. Joey picked the baby up and held him, trying to comfort him and shield him from the anger.
"Because I thought you deserved to know," Tamara answered softly.
"Yes, Tammy, you're right. I deserve to know I have a son. I deserve to spend some time with him. I deserve to have him ripped out of my arms after 5 minutes," Pacey answered bitterly.
"Pacey, I wish that you could spend more time with him, but I cannot change my flight..."
"What about visits?" he asked earnestly.
"Yes, I'm going to fly out here with a baby, which first of all, I can do SO often since I'm made of money, and be seen going to your apartment. Hey, why don't you just go around town yelling that you got your teacher pregnant, it would have the same effect!"
"I could come to visit him..."
Tamara placed a hand on his arm. "You're not made of money either, Pacey. And you can't go taking dozens of flights out of Capeside without creating some suspicion, can you?"
Pacey knew she was right, but he loved his son so much. He swallowed nervously.
"Jo...can I have him?" he asked. Joey got up and handed Chris to him.
"Hey, little guy," he whispered as he walked slowly around with the baby. "I love you, ok? And as soon as I can, I'm going to come visit you. I am so proud of you. You're gonna be really great when you grow up...nothing like your daddy." A tear fell from his eye and landed on the blanket the baby was wrapped in. "But, hey, as long as you're here, I did something right," he smiled. Tears fell silently from both Joey and Tamara. "I love you," he whispered before handing the baby reluctantly to Tamara.
Tamara hugged Pacey sadly. "I'm sorry." And she walked out. Pacey turned immediately to Joey, and they simply held each other. He cried for the son he wouldn't be able to see, and she cried for a piece of his heart that she knew had died.
