Part One
Oh! I can't. I can't go on. CHANU: You must. You will ride. I will walk. Come. VIN: Wore it out, brushing away his tracks but he's in a hurry. He missed a few. Two horses, unshod. BUCK: Indian ponies? VIN: Tracks are deep. They're slowing down. Horses are tired. He's back tracking. RAFE: Yeah, you told us that an hour ago. MOSELY: No need for that tone, Rafe. RAFE: That buck's got my sister, and this tracker ain't sure whose side he's on. JD: Hey, all Vin said was that he wasn't sure Chanu was a renegade. RAFE: Oh, yeah. Sure. Red devil's probably out there right now just waiting to jump us. BUCK: Oh, he'll probably just jump you. Indians always go for the loudest ones first. MOSELY: How do you know those tracks are fresh? VIN: Heavy dew this morning. Tracks are still wet. MOSELY: All right. Which way? VIN: Just follow me, Mr. Mosely. CHANU: Drink. VIN: Here we go. He's on foot, leading the ponies. RAFE: What are they doing now? MAN: How the hell should I know? VIN: We're close. We ain't gonna get near him with this bunch at our necks. BUCK: Yeah. JD why don't you go ahead and make camp? We'll scout ahead. RAFE: Well, I'm going with you. BUCK: That's not a good idea. RAFE: Who made you God? BUCK: Your pa did, boy when he asked for our help. RAFE: I don't care... MOSELY: Rafe. CHANU: You should drink. ( gunshot ) ( rifle cocking ) VIN: You okay, Claire? CLAIRE: Yes. VIN: Got to take you in, Chanu. BUCK: One way... or another. ( angry shouting ) EZRA: Could be an interesting creative challenge for you, Mrs. Travis-- turning this situation into one of your pro-Indian editorials. MARY: We don't know his story yet, Mr. Standish. EZRA: Lovely young woman abducted from her home by a savage-- couldn't we hazard a guess? ( angry shouting continues ) EZRA: Well... it seems you've misplaced the rest of your party. What happened to Mr. Mosely and his posse? You go around them? VIN: It was that or throw Chanu to the wolves. EZRA: An intriguing option. MARY: Are you all right, Claire? NATHAN: Let me help you down. VIN: Back off. CHRIS: Vin, you better get him behind bars before somebody does something stupid. ( angry shouting continues ) MAN: Leave him, Charlie. We'll get him later. CHRIS: Mary... you know, it won't be too long after that posse gets back that this situation's likely to get out of hand. MARY: I'll wire the judge today but it'll take him at least three days to get here. ( angry shouting continues ) MAN: Yeah. We're gonna hang him. We don't have to take this kind of stuff. MAN: What's wrong with that guy? MAN: We're gonna hang you till you're dead. CHRIS: Could be a long three days. MAN: Hey! Hey! JD: Vin... you got him? MOSELY: Claire? VIN: Nathan's seeing to her at the newspaper office. RAFE: You cut us out to bring him in? Now we know for sure what side you're on. VIN: You mean the side that ain't a lynching party? RAFE: One damn mark on my sister and you may well be looking at that. Hey, tracker, I'm talking to you. JOSIAH: Rafe... your sister's scared and needing you. You going to take time away from that to make a fuss? JD: That one's trouble, Josiah. Heard his daddy's had to pull him out of scrapes from here to Kansas territory. JOSIAH: Sounds about right for a missionary's boy. NATHAN: Yeah, that's just bruised. It should heal up in a few days as long as you take it easy. MOSELY: Claire. Sweet lord, you're safe. We've been worried sick. RAFE: What did he do to you? You okay? NATHAN: Physically, she seems fine except she got a banged-up knee. RAFE: What? You touch her?! CHRIS: Don't you mean, "thank you"? MOSELY: Rafe, there's enough hurt to go around without your vicious tongue. I should never have let you be anywhere near that reservation. He didn't...? CLAIRE: I'm all right, Papa. CHRIS: Maybe you ought to take her home. She looks like she could use some rest. MOSELY: Yes. Yes, of course. MARY: Mr. Mosely if I can do anything... MOSELY: Pray for me, Mrs. Travis. Pray that I may find forgiveness. MARY: You will. MOSELY: I don't know. I've devoted my life to bringing the enlightenment of the lord to those people. If this is my reward... JD: So, is it true that this Chanu is the son of the chief? JOSIAH: Yep. Guess I'll finally get a chance to meet him. JD: Meet him? You're going up to the reservation? JOSIAH: Somebody's got to tell him we got his boy. Yeah, figuring on staying a few days in case anybody gets any idea about breaking him out. I was hoping for a better calling card but... the Lord does work in mysterious ways. RAFE: Don't bother with that preacher talk up there. ( taps counter ) if the great bible-thumping Owen Mosely can't turn them don't think you can. JOSIAH: I ain't interested in turning them. RAFE: All you fellas are mighty high on yourselves, ain't you? I heard about your reputations and I ain't impressed. Dodge city-- I had me a run-in or two myself. JD: Reputation's got to be growed into... Sonny. You got yourself a few more years before you qualify. He does. JOSIAH: Why don't you go tend to your family, Son? RAFE: You worried I'll, uh, throw down on you? CHRIS: Not half as worried as you should be, Son. RAFE: I'll be watching you. JD: Ooh! Ooh! We're shaking in our boots. We're shaking in our boots. Aren't we? What? KO-JE: You are the new missionary? JOSIAH: Me and my missionary ways parted company a long time ago. Name's Josiah. KO-JE: I'm Ko-je. JOSIAH: I know. Been wanting to sit down and talk to you. Unfortunately, what I got to talk to you about now ain't good news. KO-JE: Chanu is dead. JOSIAH: No, but... he's been caught and he's going to stand trial for kidnapping. KO-JE: Bring him here. If he did this, he'll be punished by tribal law. JOSIAH: Afraid the people up there ain't going to agree to that. Sorry. KO-JE: They don't understand. JOSIAH: I believe I understand. KO-JE: You know my son's reasons. JOSIAH: No... but I know what it's like to have a bible shoved down your throat... how mad that can make a man. See, my father was a missionary, just like Mosely. Did his work for a while... till we broke. KO-JE: Your God... came between your father and you and between me and Chanu. Your God should find better things to do with his time. ( chanting softly ) JD: Show your stuff, Doc. ( chuckles ) ooh, two pair. Beats my queens. ( chanting continues ) JD: Why does he keep singing like that? NATHAN: I guess it's some kind of prayer. JD: Prayer? To save his hide? NATHAN: JD ain't nothing funny about a man losing his life. JD: I know. VIN: Boys. BUCK: We might have a problem. EZRA: Some disturbing rumors are circulating regarding your relationship with the man in question. VIN: I expected as much. BUCK: How well do you know him, Vin? VIN: I don't but I know his people, and I know how they think. Guessing he had a reason for doing what he did. BUCK: I saw the look in that girl's eyes when we found her. She was scared out of her wits. I can't think of any reason that would make that right. ( Chanu chanting ) NATHAN: Things quieting down out there? VIN: Not hardly. Why don't you two go grab yourself some grub. I'll watch the place for a while. VIN: Thought you might be hungry. Your father's being told where you are. If you want to, I can get him a message. Hear you been raising hell about the missionaries up at the reservation. That got something to do with you taking the girl? People think you took her so's you could have your way with her but you'd have done that long 'fore we found you if that were so. We ain't asked Claire yet, but I bet when we do... CHANU: Why talk to a foolish girl who lies like her father? Who promises my people things they will only get after they die? Who tries to destroy our spirit, our ways? The missionary steals from my people so I steal from him. VIN: You got a world of trouble on your shoulders. Now, the judge who's coming to town, he's a good man. Might understand. Could even keep you from swinging. CHANU: Food. VIN: ( gasping ) ( grunting ) ( gasping ) ( bones breaking ) CHANU: ( yelling ) VIN: ( gasping ) NATHAN: Vin... Vin, can you hear me? JD: We found him laying there, just like that. CHRIS: All right, JD you get outside, stay posted. Nobody comes in here, and nobody knows anything. VIN: Where is he? NATHAN: Gone. VIN: Aw, son of a bitch. NATHAN: Take it easy, now. CHRIS: We'll go after him, you stay put. VIN: No, I'm going after him. He's mine. NATHAN: If we keep a guard outside the townfolk will still think we got Chanu. That'll buy us a little time. VIN: All I need is 24 hours. CHRIS: That's an awful lot of hard riding for a man in your condition. NATHAN: I'll ride with him. CHRIS: All right. 24 hours. Then we form a posse. NATHAN: Whoa, boy, whoa. The place is lit up. Mosely must be home. RAFE: What do you want, tracker? VIN: Where's your sister? RAFE: She and Pa were gone when I got home. I found three horses missing and the front door wide open. VIN: ( whispering ) Must have come and took her. Mosely probably went after them. Let's go. RAFE: Hold it! ( cocks rifle ) I told you to hold it! VIN: Shoot us if you have to 'cause we're going after your sister. RAFE: Where is she? Tell me, damn it! VIN: I don't know. But Chanu's escaped. RAFE: You let him get away. We need another posse! NATHAN: No, no! We going alone! RAFE: Oh, yeah? The hell you are. When I find him I'm gonna blow him out of his damn... VIN: Sorry, kid. ( speaking native language ) JD: Josiah! Chanu got loose. Damn near killed Vin. JOSIAH: Posse? JD: Not if Vin can find him first. Chris sent me here to back you up in case Chanu comes here. KO-JE: He won't. JOSIAH: Breakfast? JD: Yeah, I'm starving. Thanks. Mmm, this is good. What is this? Excuse me. JOSIAH: You know where he is. KO-JE: What do fathers know of their sons? JOSIAH: You said he won't come here. I figure you know more. KO-JE: A feeling. JOSIAH: Ko-je... if we get to him first, we could save him. You're his father. You gotta do what it takes to protect him. KO-JE: Did your father try to protect you? JOSIAH: In his own way, yeah. KO-JE: And like most sons, it angered you. JOSIAH: Look... my father is dead. I'd like to keep Chanu from being the same. KO-JE: Your father's spirit walks with you. That's why you're unbalanced. It's too heavy on your shoulder. JOSIAH: This ain't about my balance. This is about Chanu. KO-JE: All things are connected. VIN: Still two horses trailed by one. NATHAN: Headed north just like you thought. VIN: Were, but they changed direction. NATHAN: Why? VIN: Coyote tracks. Must've crossed their path here. Bad luck to keep going straight according to his people. NATHAN: ( laughs ) How come you know so much about all this stuff? VIN: Lived with them for a while when I was buffalo hunting. Had a friend, best tracker in the tribe. Taught me what he knew. What he didn't know, he just plumb made up. NATHAN: Where is he now? VIN: Got killed when the army rounded them up and forced them to the reservation. Someone's coming in. NATHAN: Mosely. MOSELY: I followed them best I could. I knew the wilderness as a boy. But I'm a preacher, not a tracker. NATHAN: You did all you could do, Mr. Mosely. Now, it would be best if you just kept heading on home. MOSELY: Claire put her hope and trust in the Lord working selflessly by my side trying to save the Indians. I'll go to my grave trying to get her back but I can save you some time. I can show you where I lost Chanu's trail. VIN: When we come up on them, you stay back, let us handle it. MOSELY: I just want to get my daughter back safely, that's all. VIN: We'll get her back Mr. Mosely, we'll get her back. RAFE:BUCK: Real convincing, there, Ezra. EZRA: Well, I personally don't see the need for this ruse. Chris puts a tad more trust in Vin's instincts than I do. BUCK: I'll tell you the one thing we don't need... is this whole town getting all riled up 'cause Chanu is gone. It could get ugly. And I do hate ugly. RAFE: Hey, move out of the way, now! Move it! Out of the street! Right now! Get out of the way! EZRA: Well, then... brace yourself, Buck, 'cause here comes ugly and we best shut him up before he gets out of hand. RAFE: What the hell are you men doing? Why aren't you looking for Claire and my pa? BUCK: Calm down, fool, okay? Claire and your pa are in good hands. RAFE: Hey, that renegade tracker of yours damn near took my head off. So don't you tell me to calm down. EZRA: A head wound? That might be serious. Perhaps I should examine it. RAFE: Get away from me! BUCK: Let Ezra take a look at it. He knows what he's doing. Ezra, you read a medical book one time, didn't you? EZRA: Actually I just looked at the illustrations. More gruesome images I have never seen. Oh my, this is serious. Why, you could collapse at any moment. BUCK: Don't cry now, Rafe. You got him? EZRA: Yeah. Come on. BUCK: He's okay. EZRA: He's, uh, overcome by gratitude for us saving his sister. He'll be fine. Now, now, son. Watch your head. Season One
