JOE AND PAULINA'S/SAME DAY
When REMY doesn't continue, Paulina begins to speak.
PAULINA
Why would you want to renew a friendship with someone who did
nothing but cause you pain?
REMY
That's what you've seen of our friendship. But there's so much
more. Tito cares about me and I care about him.
PAULINA
He almost killed you.
REMY
That was an accident.
PAULINA
And scamming us? Was that an accident, Remy? Let me ask you
something, what's so important that has given him the power to
weasel his way back into your life?
REMY
It's nothing.
PAULINA
Remy, what is it? What is his sad story this time?
REMY
It's not a story.
PAULINA
Why does he need you?
REMY
We're friends.
PAULINA
Is he in trouble?
REMY
He's just confused.
PAULINA
Why are you avoiding my question?
REMY
You know Hayley Shepard?
PAULINA
Lorna's sister?
REMY
Yeah. She's pregnant.
PAULINA
That's right and Josie and Gary are adopting the baby.
REMY
Wow, I didn't know you knew that.
PAULINA
It's a small town, Remy. So, what does this have to do with you
and Tito?
REMY
Tito and Hayley know each other. They met last year and went out
a couple of times.
PAULINA
Please don't say what I think you're going to say.
REMY
He said it was just a one-night-stand, Paulina. She got pregnant.
PAULINA
Damn it, Remy, what more proof do you need that this guy is bad
news?
She crosses her arms angrily.
CUT TO:
BCU BOOKSTORE/DAY
A crowd of students are shown standing around and talking. As the
door to the bookstore opens, KC walks in and sees TITO waiting at
the end of the line for books. She stops. Straightening her
shoulders, she smiles and walks over to TITO, tapping him on the
shoulder.
KC
Hey, Tito. Mingling with the masses?
Tito turns and gives KC a small grin, happy to see a familiar and
not-so-hostile face.
TITO
What's up, KC? Yeah, just came by to get some books. I never knew
they cost so much. Even the used ones...
KC
Don't sweat it. You said you have help. Besides, this is nothing
compared to what Harvard's costs would be.
Tito's eyes widen a bit when hearing about Harvard. He runs a
hair through his hair and checks the progress of the line, which
is slow.
TITO
Harvard, huh? You must be a brain. That's great.
KC looks at the floor, embarrassed. She scrapes her shoe against
the floor and looks back at Tito.
KC
No. I mean...no, I didn't go to Harvard. I was supposed to, but
with...everything...
KC's voice dies away as it fills with unshed tears. She clears
her throat and lets out a sigh. Tito hesitantly pats her arm.
TITO
You gonna be okay?
KC manages a watery smile and nods.
KC (cont'd)
I'm fine. Honest. It just hurts, losing someone you love so
needlessly. But that's why I've decided to stick around and
attend BCU. My mother could use the help, too, even if she
doesn't admit it.
TITO
Your Mom must've flipped. I mean, hole-in-the-wall BCU versus the
big league stuff...
KC laughs. She and Tito edge forward in the line as they talk.
KC
You could say that. Mama wasn't exactly thrilled. Like I told
her, though, BCU has a fine journalism program.
TITO
At least you know what you want. I still don't have a clue. Your
Mom is a tough one. She'll chill out.
Tito pauses.
TITO (cont'd)
She...cares about ya. You're lucky.
As KC and Tito make their way to the beginning of the line, KC
looks like she has an idea. She feels sorry for Tito and decides
to try and help out. Despite her knowledge of him as a killer,
she is not threatened by him.
KC
Uh, Tito...?
TITO
Yeah?
KC
Listen...I...um...
KC rolls her eyes and tries again
KC (cont'd)
After we get our books...wanna go for a cup of coffee or
something? That is, if you want to.
Tito is surprised by the offer and fails to respond at first. KC
mistakes it for lack of interest.
KC
If you have other plans...
TITO
No...um, that is...coffee sounds good. Why not?
KC smiles at Tito.

STREETS OF BAY CITY/DAY
ALLI and SEAN continue with their "day off". SEAN sees
a penny and picks it up off the sidewalk.
SEAN
Looks like my day for good luck.
ALLI
Yeah, you're rich.
Sean takes note of Alli's sarcasm.
SEAN
Some of us peons don't live in a fancy mansion, princess.
ALLI
Stop, will ya? Besides, there's not as much...stuff...left like
there used to be.
SEAN
Like money?
Alli stretches and answers, annoyed.
ALLI
Wouldn't you like to know.
Alli pauses and rubs her chin.
ALLI
Speaking of money, do you got any on you?
SEAN
Oh, yeah. The penny has now morphed into a few hundred bucks.
Why?
ALLI
Well...I have an idea to spice up our little outing. Do you know
where we can get some weed?
Sean is a bit uneasy at Alli's request.
SEAN
C'mon, Alli, we can do that later. Let's go catch a movie.
Cheaper in the morning.
ALLI
If I wanted to see a movie, I'd rent a video, okay? Don't go
getting all weird with me, Sean. I get enough of *that* at home.
SEAN
I just don't think it's a good idea right now, all right? If we
ever got caught trying to score some...
ALLI
We won't.
SEAN
And you know that how? Look, we'll wait for a little bit...
ALLI
I can't believe you're chickening out...
Sean sighs.
SEAN
Alli, be careful with the weed. Promise me.
ALLI
What, are you my father now?
Sees Sean looking worried.
ALLI
Fine. Forget I said anything.
Sean notices that Alli didn't promise him that she would be
careful. As Alli walks ahead of him, annoyed, we see Sean looking
after Alli with annoyance and a bit of concern.
