CASS AND LILA'S/SAME DAY

CASS leads MORGAN to the sofa, where they sit. CHARLIE sits next to Morgan, her chin on his shoulder. Lila sits with Jasmine in an armchair.

CASS
So....tell me why you're here! To what do we owe this unexpected visit?

MORGAN
(shrugging)
No reason. I had some vacation time and decided to use it to visit my brother and his new wife. Not to mention my favorite niece.

CASS
That's it? Vacation time? In two years, I haven't been able to get you back here, even for a weekend.

MORGAN
I missed Bay City. In fact, I'm thinking about talking to John and seeing if there are any staff positions available. California's grown old, and since Lorna's back in town with my goddaughter, there's even more of a reason to move back.

CASS
What about your position at Cedars-Sinai?

MORGAN
I can give it up. I'd rather be around my family.

CASS
What about Andrea?

MORGAN
(clearing his throat)
What about her?

CASS
The last time I talked to you, things were going well between the two of you.

MORGAN
Let's just say that things have stopped going well between the two of us. It's over between me and Andrea. She's staying at Cedars, I'm moving on.

CASS
That's it? No fantastical breakup?

MORGAN
That's it. And I don't want to get into it.

LILA
(sensing the tension)
Well, I hope we can persuade you to stick around Bay City.

MORGAN
You might be able to do that. Especially with the temptation of watching my niece become a teenager and give my brother a hard time.

CHARLIE
I'd never do that, Uncle Morgan. I'm an angel.

Cass bops her lightly on the head.

CASS
An angel...of course. (He grins at her.) Tell you what, my little angel...why don't you take Charlie upstairs and put her down for her nap so that the grown-ups can talk?

CHARLIE
(sighing loudly and standing up)
I'm old enough to hear grown-up talk. You act like I'm a little kid.

CASS
(with a teasing smile)
You're far from a little kid, Charlie. But I would like to talk to Uncle Morgan alone right now.

CHARLIE
All right, all right. I get the hint. But you'll fill me in later, Uncle Morgan, right?

MORGAN
You got it, kiddo.

Charlie picks up Jasmine and goes upstairs.

Cass turns to Morgan.

CASS
So...spill. There's more to this story than you're telling.
