BC TRAIN STATION/NIGHT
ALLI and SEAN have found seats on the train, and Alli stares out
the window.
SEAN
Having second thoughts?
ALLI
(shaking her head)
Nope. None. You?
SEAN
None. But you're leaving the town you grew up in.
ALLI
So? What does that have to do with anything?
SEAN
Well...who knows how long it'll be before you see it again?
ALLI
I don't care. I'm ready to see somewhere else. I'm tired of this
boring place.
SEAN
Will you miss anyone?
ALLI
I guess...Carl....and my grandma...and the twins...Aunt
Paulina....Dante...Remy...I'll miss them, but I can come back and
visit eventually.
SEAN
Will you miss your mom?
ALLI
Will you miss Jake?
SEAN
Will you miss your mom?
ALLI
Will you miss Jake?
SEAN
I asked you first.
ALLI
Yes, a little. Now, will you miss Jake?
SEAN
He reminds me of what I'd want my dad to be like if I'd lived
with him, minus the screaming and the yelling at what I did
wrong. He can be cool when he wants to be.
ALLI
Jake IS cool. I used to want my mom to marry him. Of course, that
was before I decided I just wanted to marry him myself.
SEAN
YOU were in love with an older man?
ALLI
(punching him in the shoulder lightly)
I was ten. And he took care of my turtle for me.
SEAN
Awww....I'm tearing up with emotion.
ALLI
(grinning)
Jerk. Go to sleep. Maybe we can get some sleep before it turns
light outside and then we can watch as the country goes by.
SEAN
And Bay City gets further and further away....
Alli uses Sean's shoulder as a pillow as we:
CUT TO:
CASS and LILA'S APARTMENT/SAME NIGHT
CARL and AMANDA approach the doorway. As Carl prepares to knock
on the door, they hear slow footsteps behind them. Carl turns,
holding Amanda behind him protectively, as we see REGINALD,
limping towards them.
CARL
Well. I knew you'd be arriving.
REGINALD
Carl. What a lovely surprise. Did you come to help me inform Lila
of our little secrets?
CARL
I came to protect her, and to protect my wife's grandchild from
you.
REGINALD
The perpetual savior, how lovely. I'm sorry, Carl, but she's in
no need of protection from me. I'll bring her, nor that lovely
child, no harm. She should be aware, however, of your part in her
mother's death.
AMANDA
(stepping forward bravely)
What about your part in my husband's death, Reginald?
REGINALD
I'm sure I don't know what you're referring to, Amanda. It IS
Amanda, isn't it? You've grown up to be quite a lovely vision.
Your father would be proud of you.
AMANDA
Don't you dare mention my father.
REGINALD
And I WAS sorry to learn of your husband's death.
AMANDA
I'm sure you were. Especially since you were behind it.
CARL
Amanda...
REGINALD
And now Carl's come to protect Lila. I can assure you, Carl, your
concern is not needed.
CARL
You're going to turn her world upside down with lies, Reginald.
REGINALD
They are far from lies, Carl. They are simply the truth that you
refuse to acknowledge.
Before Carl can stop him, Reginald reaches out and pushes the
doorbell.
CARL
Reginald...don't do this---
The door opens and LILA stands there in surprise as she sees
Carl.
LILA
Carl? Amanda? What a lovely surprise.
CARL
Lila---
He stops speaking as he realizes that Reginald has a gun trained
on him. Amanda goes in with Lila, who begins looking panicked.
LILA
What's going on? Who are you? Carl...?
REGINALD
All will be explained shortly, my dear. Now, if you'd be so kind
as to invite us all inside, I think Carl and I have some news
that you'd appreciate hearing.
CARL
Lila...is Cass here?
LILA
(shaking her head)
He's working late...we had dinner with Matt and Lorna tonight and
now he's gone back to the office...
CARL
The children?
LILA
Asleep upstairs...both of them.
REGINALD
We can end the small talk. All of you, inside, and we'll discuss
what we need to discuss.
As they go inside, the door shuts.
