Chapter 59 Sonny knocked quickly but lightly at the gatehouse door before twisting the knob and walking in. Looking around the room the first thing he noticed was Ned and Lois sleeping on the couch, putting his fingers to his lips he motioned for Brenda to follow him inside and she immediately looked at Ned and Lois with a small smile on her lips. B - "They’re together?" she asked him curiously. S - "Na," he sighed "but they should be." B - "Oh yeah? Since when have you been a Ned and Lois fan?" she replies skeptically. S - "Look at them." He said quietly turning his head in their direction, even in sleep they had been drawn to one another, Lois lay curled against him and Ned’s arm was draped loosely around her. B - "Yep they should be together, they’re both too stubborn." S - "Isn’t that like the pot calling the kettle black." He grinned. B - "No it’s just the truth." She replied with a small shrug. S - "Yeah you would think that after two kids and ten years they could get it right don’t you?" B - "Wait a minute did you say TWO kids? When did that happen?" she asked her voice surprised and it must have been a little too loud because Lois stirred on the couch. S - "Long story." He whispered hoping that Lois would fall back asleep, but no such luck. L - "Corinthos?" she muttered her eyes opening to small slits. S - He dropped Brenda’s hand and quickly approached her "Hey Lois, rough night?" he smirked. L - "You don’t know the half of it, those little monsters were up all night. Nedley and I didn’t get any sleep." She grumbled. S - "You didn’t huh?" he grinned. L - "Corinthos get your mind out of the gutter." She replied closing her eyes and trying to slip back into dreamland. "What are you doing here anyway? It’s not five yet is it?" S - "Na not even noon." He grinned and she groaned. L - "Jeez Sonny we just put the kids down for a nap at 10:00." S - "Sorry." He smirked. L - "No your not." S - "Your right I’m not, now which room is she is?" he asked quietly. L - "She’s in our room, we had to separate them all." She muttered sleepily and snuggled deeper into the couch and closer to Ned. S - "Sleep tight Cerullo." He whispered and she gave him a small smile in return not even bothering to open her eyes. Sonny turned back to Brenda and held out his hand motioning silently for her to come with him. B - She looked at Ned and Lois one last time before she approached him and took his hand. "Is Lo okay? Why is she so tired?" S - "Long night?" he grinned. B - "Oh." She murmured and followed him up the stairs hesitating only once to look back over her shoulder at the unconscious couple fast asleep on the sofa. At the top of the stairs Sonny turned right then walked to the first door and began to open it. B - "Sonny?" she said stopping him. S - "Hmm?" B - "This is Ned and Lois room we shouldn’t be in there." S - "It’s okay?" B - "But why are we here?" S - "You’ll see." B - "But Sonny…" S - "Shh." He said ignoring her protest and placing a finger to her lips then leaned over to kiss her softly. "It’s okay I promise." She nodded slightly and tightly held onto his hand as he pushed open the door and walked into the shadowed bedroom dragging her behind him. Light peaked through the half open blinds and cast shadows on the blanket covered ball in the center of the large bed. B - "Sonny?" He ignored her but her soft voice must have disturbed the lump on the bed because it flung off the covers and rolled over. Sonny walked closer and stopped beside the bed leaning down to gently brush back the dark strands of hair from the face of a sleeping angel. Brenda watched him curiously her breath hitching in her throat as her eyes came to rest on the innocent sleeping face. S - "Sweetheart," he began softly "this is your daughter, this is Veronica Layne Corinthos." Chapter 60 Brenda took one hesitant step after another towards Sonny and the occupied bed finally coming to a stop beside them. B - "Sonny what are you talking about?" she asked in a furious whisper. S - "Sweetheart this is your daughter." He repeated making sure to keep his voice low enough so that it wouldn’t disturb Veronica. B - "No." she said as her head shook back and forth in denial but her hope filled eyes remained glued to his. S - "Yes Brenda. Look at her she looks just like you, she’s beautiful." B - "Sonny?" S - "Look." He repeated and placed a hand on either arm, turning her so that she stood facing the bed with him directly behind her. B - "Oh my god." She whispered swaying back against his chest looking for his reassuring support since her knees had seemingly turned to Jell-O. They both stood there silently for the next few minutes, Sonny watched Brenda’s reactions as shock, disbelief and confusion passed over her face before finally acceptance came and she allowed herself to sink to her down beside the bed her face coming to rest at the same level as her daughters who slept peacefully only a few inches away. Her daughter, she thought in awe trying to take in everything all at once afraid that she could disappear in a blink of the eye. Trying to memorized her delicate features, watching her tiny shoulders as they moved up and down with each breath that she took, watching her eyelids flutter as she dreamed, she was the most beautiful thing that Brenda had ever seen, a living breathing dream, an answered prayer. She lifted her hand extending it hesitantly towards the small dark head and gently stroked the silky hair humbled that something so beautiful could be a part of her. She turned her head and looked up at Sonny who silently watched from above. "She’s real." She said in a hushed voice. S - "Yeah baby, she’s real." Was his only response and the only one she needed for now so she looked back at her daughter with tears of happiness and joy gleaming in her eyes. Somewhere on a deserted street miles outside of Port Charles. M - "I want an update NOW!" C - "Boss we lost her." He said into the phone and listened as his voice echoed back at him across the miles wincing at how bad and lame it sounded. His sentence was met with complete silence until a deadly voice answered from the other end. M - "What do you mean you lost her?" C - "Well we didn’t lose her really," he added hastily and rushed on trying to come up with a plausible explanation "we’ve been tracking her car but it is out in the country right now and if we get too close she could spot us." M - "I want her found now!" he yelled so loudly that Carlos had to quickly yank the receiver away from his ear waiting for a few seconds before tentatively holding it up once again. C - "Sure Boss." He answered unenthusiastically. M - "Now! You hear me? No one will get in my way!" he yelled again before slamming down the phone. C - He made a face at the phone and quickly hung up the whole time talking to himself quietly "I want her now. Now, now, now, now. Does he ever say anything else?" He muttered clearly mocking his boss before turning to his partner. "Come on let’s turn around and head back to town she’ll move eventually, plus I’m sick of this car so let’s go get something to eat." Ned and Lois were still sleeping soundly on the couch when Ned vaguely became aware for something tugging at his hair, he pried open an eye and groaned quietly. Br - "Hi Daddy." He smiled and dropped his hand. N - "Brendan what are you doing up your supposed to be asleep." He told him and smothered a yawn. Br - "I’m not sleepy." He answered easily his grin a mirror of the one his father normally sported when he wasn’t quite so tired. N - "Shh, while you may not be sleepy your mother is so be a little quieter so you don’t wake her okay?" L - "Too late." She growled into his shirt before lifting her head and pushing her hair out of her face to look at the two of them. "Hey kiddo what are you up?" she asked and held out her arms so that he could climb up with then onto the couch. Br - "I don’t like naps. I hate them." He said stubbornly crossing his arms in front of himself and glaring at both of his parents. Ned bit his lip to hold back a laugh but Lois narrowed her eyes and looked sternly at her son. L - "Brendan.." she told him warningly Br - "Fine," he mopped, "I don’t hate them I just really, really, really, really…" N - "Okay sport we get the idea." he replied cutting him off "Now where’s your sister?" Br - "She’s sleeping, so’s Roni." He told his father before looking innocently at his mother "Mommy who’s that lady that with Uncle Sonny?" L - "What?" she asked confused. N - "Sonny’s here?" he asked at the same time. L - "Yeah, yeah." She answers waving him off and turning back to Brendan. "Honey what lady are you talking about?" Br - "The pretty lady that’s crying, she’s really sad." He confides. N - "Brendan where is your Uncle Sonny?" he asks taking control of the situation from a stunned Lois. Br - "In your room." N - "And the lady?" Br - "I told you. She’s with Uncle Sonny." he said impatiently. N - "In my room?" Br - "Yes." He answered clearly boarded with all the questions. "Is that his girlfriend?" N - "Why?" Br - "Cause he was kissing her." He answered as he wrinkled his nose in distaste and made a funny face having any idea what kind of bombshell he had just dropped. L - "WHAT!" she practically yelled standing up so rapidly that she nearly tossed her son out of her lap and onto the floor. Contrary to what little Brendan had said Sonny and Brenda were not presently kissing (he had just managed to witness their innocent little peck earlier) they were both watching their daughter sleep and had been for some time now. S - "Brenda?" S - "Hmm?" she answered but didn’t remove her eyes from Roni. S - "Come on." he said holding out his hand for her to take. B - She whipped her head around swiftly and looked up at him. "I’m not leaving her." She whispered fiercely. S - "Shh." He said gently and they both watched as Veronica sighed and shifted but remained fast asleep "We aren’t leaving, I promise, we just need to talk and I don’t want to wake her up." B - She silently debated for a moment before reaching for the blanket and tucking it around her daughters warm little body then took his hand and stood up. Her legs tingled as the blood rushed back into them, they had fallen asleep while she had been kneeling alongside the bed, and now her balance was precarious at best. Sonny steadied her and slowly guided her towards the door. S - "Are you okay?" B - "Yeah," she answered looking down at her legs and using one hand to try to rub the blood into circulation while the other held tightly onto his arm to steady herself. S - You sure?" he asked concern evident in his voice. B - "I’m fine." She smiled. "In fact I am better than I have been in years." She replied while she continued to rub her leg gradually loosening her grasp on his sleeve. "See," She smiled "good as new." And took a small step only to stumble on her still numb limbs and end up in Sonny’s arms in the middle of the empty hallway. Their eyes locked for a second then hers drifted and lingered on his lips before she pulled them back to his only to find them focused on her slightly parted lips. She leaned forward and he met her half way, their lips and bodies meeting and clinging, both of them becoming oblivious to time, circumstance, and place. Back downstairs Ned is warily watching Lois who is nearing the boiling point. N - "Lois calm down." He said reaching out to take their startled son from her and placed him on the floor well out of the way. L - "Corinthos is making out with some, some, WOMAN" she spat "in OUR bedroom!" N - "Now Lo…" L - "Don’t ‘now Lois’ me Ashton!" she said marching towards the steps with Ned fast on her heals trying to jump in front and bar her way but it was definitely not working. N - "Lois I don’t think you should go up there." L - "The hell I shouldn’t!" she replied leaping past him and barreled up the stairs with Ned and a fascinated Brendan following close behind. Lois rounded the corner at the top before they were even halfway up and jerked to a stop, staring, her mouth hanging open in shock. Br - "Daddy?" he said and tugged at Ned’s sleeve as he watched Lois round the corner and disappear and thought about quickening his own pace. N - "Yeah son?" he said looking down at him but continuing up the steps Br - "I didn’t think Uncle Sonny had a girlfriend." N - "He doesn’t." he replied warily trying to hurry the little boy along. .Br - "Mommy’s mad, is he in trouble?" N - He smiled down at him as he stepped up the final step then turned the corner finally lifting his head to look ahead barely preventing from plowing into his missing wife, looking over her head his mouth gapped for a second before he snapped it closed and answered his sons innocent question "Oh yeah son, your uncles in a whole world of trouble." He muttered while taking in the scene before him.
