About Us

West Henderson High School is located in a rural/suburban setting in the Mills River Valley of the northwestern part of Henderson County. It is one of four public high schools in the Henderson County Public Schools System.

West Henderson High School opened in the fall of 1960, bringing together students who had previously attended Mills River, Fletcher, and Etowah high schools. The land on which the school was built was donated by Leander and Vernon Johnson, the owners of nearby Johnson Farm, now a living history museum listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

More than 900 students in grades nine through twelve attend West Henderson High School. Students enroll in four courses per semester. Approximately 70 percent of students continue their education after high school.

West Henderson High School offers a wide variety of courses to meet the individual needs of all students. Honors and advanced placement classes are available in the core academic and fine arts areas. Vocational programs include business, home economics, child care, health occupations, masonry, agriscience and carpentry. Within the 90-minute block classes, teachers use a variety of strategies and teaching techniques.

The faculty, including 64 certified staff members, exhibits a commitment to students and the profession. More than half hold master’s degrees or advanced-level certification. In addition, the school’s staff includes three full-time guidance counselors, two assistant principals, a media specialist, an enrichment specialist, and two teacher assistants. Staff members sponsor extracurricular and co-curricular clubs and serve on a variety of committees. Staff development, with an emphasis on technology, is encouraged.

Students from West Henderson High School traditionally excel in a wide variety of areas. The Class of ’01 received almost $1.5 million in scholarships. Sports teams, fine arts groups, quiz bowl teams, vocational clubs, and publications staffs consistently win top honors in regional, state, and national competitions. Students and their accomplishments are recognized each spring in an awards assembly.
