Chapter Nine
Fifth Avenue
"Lunch was excellent Lucky." Liz exclaimed, and skipped a little. "I never
thought I'd ever be eating at Tavern on the Green. It was like something I
only thought happened in wishes and fairytales." Liz looked up and him and
threaded her fingers with his. "This whole day has been like that for me, like
a fairytale, or a wish come true. Thank you, Lucky." Liz reached up and
quickly kissed his cheek.
Lucky stared down into her eyes and covered the spot that she had kissed.
Then he smiled and pulled on her hand. "Well, the day isn't even close to
over, " he said, looking up at the store that they were passing. "It's only
1:30, and we've got some shopping to do!"
"Tiffany's?" Liz questioned, "What are we going in here for?" She glanced
around as she passed through the door that Lucky was holding open for her.
"We are going in here to get you something that will always remind you of
today." Lucky smiled, and headed for a salesperson. "Where do you pick up
special orders?" he inquired of a distinguished looking salesman.
Liz hung back, nervously expecting another episode like the one that had
happened at Tavern on the Green.
Instead the older salesman looked up with a smile. "Second floor, straight
back. You can't miss it."
Lucky nodded politely and pulled Liz toward the stately staircase. Liz looked
over her shoulder at the still smiling salesman. "Thank you," she said with a
wave of her free hand.
The salesman nodded and waved back. Turning to an associate that was standing
close-by he said, "It's so nice to see such polite young people that are so
obviously in love." His associate smiled in the direction of the retreating
couple. "It certainly is," she agreed.
"Lucky," Liz said, pulling him to a stop on the staircase. "Why are we here
and why are we going to the 'special order' section?"
Lucky smiled sheepishly at Liz. "Well, I had to get a little help with Jason
for this one....but I've got a surprise for you," he continued up the stairs,
once again pulling Liz behind him.
"Why would you need Jason's help with anything?" Liz asked.
"Well, places like Tiffany's don't usually let people buy things over the
phone without a credit card," Lucky looked down at Liz and laughed. "And I
just couldn't seem to find mine. So Jason made a few calls and it was agreed
that the item would be waiting for us when we got here."
Lucky walked to a recessed area and spoke to the young woman behind the
counter. She nodded and handed him a distinctive package of Tiffany blue with
a white ribbon. Lucky handed the long package to Liz.
"This is so you don't ever forget today, and how much you mean to me," Lucky
said to her, with tears in his eyes.
Liz took the package from his hand, handling it like a piece of spun sugar.
"Oh....Lucky....what have you done?" she asked, looking up at him with tear-
bright eyes.
"Let's take this outside where we have less of an audience," Lucky said,
grabbing her hand again.
Liz hardly remembered walking out of the store, and settling on a nearby
bench.
"Are you going to open it?" Lucky asked with a laugh.
"Okay...but Lucky! You've done so much for me...." Liz said.
Lucky interrupted her, "And I want to do so much more, so just open it."
Liz carefully untied the ribbon and took off the robins-egg-blue paper to
reveal a black velvet box. She glanced up at Lucky who nodded at her to
continue. Liz gently raised the lid of the box and discovered a delicate gold
ID bracelet. Her name was inscribed on the ID plate and there was a tiny
charm of the Empire State Building on one link. "Oh Lucky," Liz cried, tears
spilling down her cheek. It's perfect. I love it so much."
"Look on the inside, Elizabeth." Lucky said tightly, his voice breaking with
emotion.
Liz turned the bracelet over and read the inscription on the back. It said:

Dreams of Gold
Liz looked up at Lucky. "Dreams of Gold?" she questioned.
Lucky took the bracelet and placed it on her wrist. "That's what I want for
you Liz, dreams of gold. And that's what I wanted today to be for you, a
golden dream."
"Lucky, after today I no longer identify with Alice." Liz said.
Lucky looked at her and smiled.
"Now I know just how Cinderella felt. I couldn't have had a dream as
wonderful as today has been." Liz reached up and wrapped her arms around
Lucky's neck and hugged him tight. Slowly, Lucky's arms encircled her waist
and he held her. All around them was the cacophony of the busy New York City
streets, but all they could hear was the beating of each others heart.
