When I See You Smile

Chapter 10
A hotel suite
Lucky was sitting on a sofa drumming his fingertips on the table next to him.
"Liz, if you don't get a move on we aren't going to get there in time!" Lucky
yelled "as it is......" Lucky trailed off as Liz came through the doorway of
the bedroom.
"I'm sorry Lucky," Liz was fumbling with something on her wrist, "I had the
hardest time getting my hair to stay up." Liz walked over to him and sat
down on the sofa, she held out her wrist and her new bracelet. "Would you
mind Lucky, I just can't seem to get it clasped."
Lucky just stared at her.
"Lucky.....bracelet....wrist?" Liz asked, giggling.
"Uh. Man. Wow! You look beautiful." Lucky stammered
Liz glanced down and blushed. "I went out and bought it after you asked me
out, I was hoping I might get the opportunity to wear it. You don't think
I'll be too dressed up for a play do you?" Liz glanced up to find Lucky still
staring.
"Oh...uh....huh?" Lucky said, blushing.
"Never mind." Liz said with a laugh, "Will you put my bracelet on for me?"
"Oh sure." Lucky smiled at her, unable to take is eyes off of the sleeveless,
deep purple, crushed velvet dress. It was perfect for a night at the Theater.
It ended right above her knees, showing off her legs, encased in black
stockings. He was amazed to see that she even had purple velvet heels on that
matched the dress. He glanced up to her hair that she has said had been hard
to put up, and found that she had twisted it into some kind of complicated
looking knot, but that there were loose tendrils framing her face.
"Elizabeth you take my very breath away," Lucky said quietly.
Liz looked up at him, her eyes filled with tears. "I never thought anyone
would find me beautiful after what happened Lucky, much less the one person I
wanted to see me that way."
Lucky cleared his throat and blinked hard, staring at the ceiling. Then he
stood up from the sofa and took her hand, helping her to her feet. "Are you
ready to go?" He asked.
Liz backed away and looked him up and down. Admiring the black jacket, white
collarless shirt and black slacks that he was wearing. "And you thought *I*
looked good! You look amazing Lucky. Where on earth did you get that?"
Lucky looked down and grinned. "Well not at the place that they fit you on
the way to the cash register. That's for sure." He held out his arm to Liz.
"Let's go."
Outside the Majestic Theater
"Are you sure that you want to see Phantom of the Opera?" Lucky asked. "I'm
sure that I can still get tickets to Les Miserables or Miss Saigon."
"Lucky this is perfect!" Liz sighed "I remember when Phantom opened, they
did this big show on Entertainment tonight, and I said to myself, 'One day
Liz, you'll get to see that on Broadway.' Like everything else you've done
for me today," Liz touched her bracelet. "it's another dream come true."
Lucky smiled down at her and brushed her cheek. "Elizabeth, every time you
smile at me, I'm reminded that sometimes dreams do come true. This day was a
very small way to repay the joy you give me."
Lucky took her hand and led her into the theater, Liz looked around in awe at
the beautiful surroundings, and even Lucky himself was pretty impressed.
"This is beautiful Lucky, where are our seats?" Liz asked
"Wait a minute," Lucky said, pulling on her hand to slow her down "we have
to buy the requisite souvenirs."
"No way! You have already spent WAY too much today." Liz protested, trying
to pull him towards the doors leading to the seats.
Lucky gave her a sly grin. "You haven't seen anything yet, just wait until
you see where we are going for dinner." He laughed as he led her to a glass
counter.
"I'll take a program, a book, the complete cast recording soundtrack CD, and
two of the T-shirts with the glow-in-the-dark Masks on them. One in Xtra
large," Lucky paused and looked over at Liz "and one in small."
"Make that two in X-tra large." Liz injected, when Lucky looked at her
questioningly she smiled and said "I'll use mine as a night shirt."
Lucky placed his hand over his heart and whispered, "More material to fuel my
fantasies." He leered teasingly at her.
Liz laughed lightheartedly and lightly punched him in the arm "Be careful
Lucky, or I might mistake you for a typical male."
Lucky rubbed the offended arm and made a hurt face. "Owwww, and how could you
ever mistake me for typical?" He turned to the girl behind the counter who
was grinning at their antics and paid her for his purchases. He took the bag
from her and handed it to Liz. "Just for hitting me, you have to carry your
own stuff."
"My stuff?" Liz said "Lucky I don't need all this stuff."
"Well one of the shirts is for me, but the rest is yours. To remember this
by. Besides, I've already got the CD and I'm sure that if you love this show
as much as I do, that you will want the CD too." Lucky smiled down at her and
took her hand again, leading her to the seating area marked Orchestra Section.
Lucky showed their tickets to the usher, and he pointed them down the aisle.
"Row 15, seats 17 and 18, right in the middle." The handsome usher then
smiled at Liz and said "I hope you enjoy the show."
Liz smiled back but Lucky scowled at him and put his arm around Liz's
shoulders "I'm sure we will."
The usher smirked at Lucky's display of possessiveness and smiled at the
couple walking up behind them, prompting Lucky and Liz to move down the aisle
in search of their seats.
"What was that all about?" Liz asked Lucky, puzzled.
"I didn't like the way he was staring at you." Lucky said, glaring over his
shoulder at the usher.
Liz let out a joyful peal of laughter. "Lucky Spencer, you're jealous!"
Lucky looked quickly back to Liz, "I am not, I just didn't like the way he was
looking at you," he tightened his hold on her shoulders.
"You were jealous because I smiled at him, admit it Lucky." Liz stopped as
they came to their row. The show was about to start so Liz and Lucky had to
make their way past the people who were already seated, the pause in the
conversation gave Lucky a moment to examine his own feelings.
When they reached their seats they sat down and Lucky held his hand out to
Liz, palm up, Liz laced her fingers through Lucky's and smiled at him.
"You're right Elizabeth, I was jealous, you just look so beautiful, I couldn't
help it." Lucky said with a wry smile.
Liz looked at Lucky for a moment with a look that he couldn't quite get and
then she smiled and said "That's okay, I wasn't too happy with the way that
girl behind the counter was flirting with you." Liz laughed at his stunned
look "What? Did you think I didn't notice?" she asked.
"Well I sure didn't" he said, squeezing her hand, "I only have eyes for you."
"Tonight maybe." Liz said with a forced laugh
Lucky gently touched Liz's chin, turning her face towards him, "Tonight and
every night, and every day." He smiled into her eyes, "You are the only one
for me Liz, I know that without a doubt, without you I would be lost."
"Without you, I don't think I would be here." Liz replied, her meaning
unmistakable.
"Yes you would be, You're strong Elizabeth, with or without me, you would have
found the strength to get through it." Lucky said, leaving no doubt as to
what he was referring to.
"You're wrong Lucky, I'm getting stronger everyday, but for these last 6
months, you have been my strength and I wouldn't have made it without you."
With that said, Liz laid her head on Lucky's shoulder as the house lights went
down, and the unmistakable music of Phantom of the Opera thundered through the
theater.
