The Ammo Dump

In trying to decide how to approach this subject, I came to the conclusion that a Mag7 writer doesn't need to know a whole lot about ammunition, just enough to prevent mistakes a reasonably firearm savvy reader would catch. Which cartridge is fired by which of the Seven's guns, interchangeability of the ammunition, and the anatomy of a centerfire cartridge.

Ready?

OW:

Chris: .45 Colt in his handgun, .44 Henry flat in his rifle. This means Buck can use his handgun ammo and JD his rifle cartridges.

Buck: His handgun, as indicated above, fires .45 Colt. His Win. '73 shoots .44-40 Winchester shells. Vin can use Buck's rifle shells in his mare's leg (and possibly his rifle), Chris can borrow his Colt's cartridges.

Vin: That mare's leg he lugs around uses .44-40s. His rifle is chambered for either .44-40 or .45-75 Winchester, depending on if it is a Win. '73 or a '76. If it's the latter, and he uses .45-75s, then Josiah might want to guard his stash.

Josiah: His revolver uses .45 S&W. Since the .45 S&W is shorter than the .45 Colt, Chris and Buck can use the cartridge in their Colts. Unfortunately for Josiah, he can't make use of the .45 Colt--it wont fit into the Schofield's shorter cylinder. His Win. '76 carbine would have taken the .45-75 Winchester. Vin might have been able to use them.

JD: The kid's Lightning's were probably chambered for .38 Colt. No one else among the Seven uses that caliber. JD's carbine, however, uses the aforementioned Henry flat that Chris' rifle fires. They can share, if need be.

Nathan: Nathan and Ezra have at least one thing in common--the .44 Remington cartridge their sidearms feed on. The Spencer carbine was loaded up with either .56-56 or .56-52.

Ezra: Roll up the gambler's sleeve and you'll find a two-shot deringer that held .41 Shorts. Despite the large diameter, the round was only good for very close range. His revolver required .44 Remingtons, just like Nathan's. The ultra-cool revolving rifle was probably a conversion, altered to fire .38 rimfires.

Nettie: OK, she's not one of the boys, but she could be a source of ammo in a tight spot. Nathan could probably utilize her rifle ammunition and Josiah could definitely load up on her hangun cartridges.

ATF:

Chris: As in the OW, Chris is a .45 man. Not .45 Colt, but .45 ACP (Automatic Colt Pistol. Since I didn't give anyone else a .45, neither a borrower nor a lender he.

Buck: Buck, on the other hand, can share his .40 S&W ammo with Vin, Ezra, Josiah, and J.D..

Vin: In addition to the aforementioned .40 S&W, he might use .41 Mag if he were to go with the "bigger is better" philosophy. Josiah could make use both of these cartridges.

Josiah: Like Vin, .40 S&W and .41 Mag.

JD: More .40 S&W gun food.

Nathan: Somebody had to use the "other" popular caliber in law enforcement, so it's 9mm for our favorite healer.

Ezra: The last of the .40 S&W boys.
