Tetbury's claim to the Poet John Oldham is recorded in Lee's book Tetbury, pages 184 - 191
John Oldham was born in Shipton 9 Aug 1653. About 1667 he became a student at Tetbury School, where his talent was recognised, and in June 1670 he entered St Edmund's Hall, Oxford. In May 1674 he took his BA, then took employment and continued to develop his skill as a poet.
His contempories praised his poetic skills. He caught Small Pox and died 9 Dec 1683 aged 29. The account gives Tetbury credit for his initial education. He is not known to have visited after 1670.
