Whiston, where the ancestors of the Talboys of Tetbury lived, was in
the ancient west riding of the county of Yorkshire. There is a brief pedigree of the family in 'The Visitation of the County of Gloucester taken in the year 1623', edited J. Maclean and W.C. Heane, Harleian Society 21 (1885).
The place, now in South Yorkshire, is near Sheffield and forms part of the nearby conurbation of Rotherham.
Richard Talboys, descended from the Talboys of Whiston in Yorkshire, purchased the Manor of Doughton on 20 Jan 1627. He was High Sheriff of Gloucestershire 1653 and died 3 Aug 1663 aged 87.
He was succeeded by his son Benjamin who wed Alice daughter of Sylvester Garrand of Broadtown Wiltshire and had sons Richard and Benjamin
Richard succeeded and had a daughter Alice. In 1729 he devised the estate to his nephew Thomas
Thomas died 1765 and left the estate to his kinsman Thomas, son of Charles Talboys
The estate was inherited by son Thomas 1802 who in 1818 sold the Manor to John Paul Paul
