Ultra Magnus is an Autobot's Autobot. A professional soldier by trade. Noble, self-sacrificing, a brilliant military commander. Very uncomfortable in the role of leader; would much rather be carrying out someone else's orders than being in command of all the Autobot forces himself. Receptive and respectful of humans and their opinions and treats them as full equal partners, more so than some of the other Autobots.
Ultra Magnus is, to his core, a professional soldier. Like the other Autobots, he yearns for peace, but he does not shy away from the vigors of war.
In 2005, following the Battle of Autobot City, the dying Optimus Prime bestowed the Matrix of Leadership to Ultra Magnus and named him as the new commander of the Autobot forces. Ultra Magnus was uncomfortable with the role and not particularly gifted in this area, and after the Autobot Hot Rod assumed the Matrix and became the leader Rodimus Prime, Ultra Magnus resumed his more comfortable place as a battlefield commander. He was one of Rodimus Prime's trusted confidants and supporters.
Ultra Magnus was one of the leading instigators behind the formation of the Earth Defense Command, an interstellar human force designed with the help of advanced Autobot technology, at the turn of the century. He remained a close partner and friend of the initial EDC officers, including Supreme EDC Commander General Thomas Halberd and Captain Marissa Faireborne, up until the departure of the Autobots from Earth following the "Final Offensive" of 2007.
Ultra Magnus can transform into a eighteen-wheel car carrier. He is equipped with a photonic cannon and twin shoulder-mounted missile launchers capable of hitting a target up to 30 miles away. He is a shrewd tactician and an efficient battlefield commander.
