The departure of Brian as the Beach Boy's main creative force in the late sixties, left the rest of the Beach Boys in a crisis situation. With none of the other members able to adequately fill the hole left by Brian, they simply diddn't have enough material to fill an album. The whole SMiLE debacle had seriously dented the Beach Boys credit. The public was frustrated at not having acess to all the wonderful music they had heard so much about. How to "solve" both of these dilemmas? Simple- the boys could draw from the wealth of material left over from SMiLE . So, from Smiley Smile to Surf's Up, a large amount of SMiLE material appeared in some form or another, either directly lifted fom it, with additional overdubs, entirely re-recorded, or even added to another song. What follows is an album by album list of tracks which originated from SMiLE. (feel free to drop me a line to chastise any glaring omissions...). And so we begin..
SMILEY SMILE:
HEROES AND VILLAINS- Undoubtedly SMiLE's grandest track, rather unceremoniouslu redused to this. I guess it's a fine track in it's own right, but compare it to the 'cantina' version version and one realises how much of a let down it is... In common with much of this album, it just sounds so damn burnt out...aparently assembeled in three days, in an emptied out swimming pool...geezus...
VEGETABLES- Or "Vege-Tables" as ot was previously known (I know that's really anal but...). Realy stripped to it's bear bones here, as the boys sing ober a primitive bass-line and the sounds of vegetables being chomped on. The "I know that you'll fell better..." is a section from the SMiLE sessions.
FALL BREAKS AND BACK TO WINTER- Real nice track, this- one of the more full-sounding tracks here. The recording dates from the Smiley Smile, but some believe it to have evolved form the Earth section of the Elements suite...not sure to be honest...um, a little help anyone?
SHE'S GOIN' BALD- The first section of this was written during the SMiLE sessions, and when it had a different, Van Dyke Parks-penned lyric, adn it was known as "He Gives Speeches". It appeares here in re-recorded form, with the additional lyrics from Mike Love. Dennis and Al instantly assumed it was about fellatio, for some reason.....Hmmmm.....
WITH ME TONIGHT- Again, a re-recording. The SMiLE version sounds a lot jauntier than this version. Cords are a wee bit different too.
WIND CHIMES- A huge departure from the original- only the main vocal melody remains, this time set against a skeletal backdrop. Much darker than the SMiLE cut too, and perhaps more moving- it is desolate, distant, sounding abstract. The beautiful tag has its origins from a different SMiLE- era track- it is based upon the fade-out of "Tones/Tune X".
WONDERFUL- Re-recording again, strangely delivered, with an almost whispered bocalfrom Carl. Also, the "laughing" secton originates from an acapella cut, which is used at the end of Vegetables on the Good Vibrations Box Set.
WHISTLE IN- Heard this track was writtn during the SMiLE sessions...care to lend a hand someone?
WILD HONEY
MAMA SAYS- This acapella number was originally part of the Vega-Tables equation. It doesn't sound well on its own though. Oh well.
