MONEY
The exchange rate fluctuates at around forty-five baht to the US dollar. There is no limit to the amount of dollars brought into the country. US, most foreign currency, and sometimes credit cards can be exchanged at banks, airports, numerous ATM machines and elsewhere. It may be hard to find a bank in the smaller towns that will accept a foreign credit card. Foreigners may open savings or checking account. Most banks provide the same services as anywhere around the world. American Express Travelers Checks are the best choice for the short-termtraveler for safety against theft, and they can be replaced if lost.
When bartering for something in Thailand, never get upset. Keep smiling and visually appear to think the price is too high. Be in no hurry to close the deal, this puts you in an advantageous position and they may make offer a lower price to hurry negotiations along.

THAILAND VISAS
Once you have your passport you may easily obtain a visa by calling a Thai Consulate or embassy in large cities worldwide. To find a Thai consulate or embassy try the telephone directory, call the information operator or Thai Airways. You will need two visa size photographs and a passport. There are no health restrictions or vaccinations required, provided you have not traveled through any countries with diseased areas, in which case you will need a health certificate. An international driver's license can be issued from your local dept. of drivers' licenses, or Motor Club, with no test required, provided you have a valid driver's license. Left-hand driving rules apply.

VISAS

Every country has separate visa agreement. Sometimes a visa may be obtained upon entry for a stay of two weeks or a month. Ask for what you need when you call the Thai consulate or embassy.
A overstay fine of $4. for every day past visa expiration date will be collected upon departure.
If you don't mind the fine you can overstay with no problem.
A $5. AIRPORT DEPARTURE TAX IS LEVIED UPON DEPARTURE.

WEATHER
Central Thailand, the southern parts of the east, and the south are nearly always hot, and can be very hot and humid during the rainy season. April- October.
Chiangmai and the north are normally not as hot due to its higher elevation and its distance from the equator. The north's weather is the most comfortable in the country during any season. November- April, is the dry and cool season. This is the tourist season, when the highest number of tourists arrive, mostly from Asia, Australia, and Europe. The coldest temperatures are in January and February, at night it gets cold enough for a jacket or a heavier coat if you are going high into the mountains. At this time of year it seldom rains.
