THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE EXPEDITION |
The Golden Triangle is the mountainous northern area where Thailand, Burma, and Laos intersect. Its name is derived from the golden fields of poppies that were once abundant. Through the Golden Triangle and along the Eastern Laotian border flows the Mekong River from its origins in Tibet. Other rivers are the Ruak, Kok, Ping, Yom, Nan, Lao and other numerous tributaries. All our excursions start in Chiangmai, the Northern Capitol City, see northern map. |

This area has many ethnic Hilltribe people who occupy the mountainous area near Chiangmai. These tribal groups have interesting cultures and we often stay overnight in a village and have a chance to participate and experience their lifestyles. |
If you check out northern map you will see our general route in yellow highlight. This route starts out northward along the Burma border then swings east to the point where Burma Thailand and Laos intersect at the junction of the Sai and Mekong rivers. This point is literally The Golden Triangle. From there we can follow along the Mekong for a while and loop back to Chanagmai or check out the mountains near Chiangrai before looping back. |
This is the general plan. I have long ago realized as I have mentioned earlier, it is recommended to keep a loose itinerary for our enjoyment while within the Golden Triangle. |
If you are not sure if you are up to a difficult motorcycle excursion such as the proposed Esan Ruins 2000 expedition, or simply want to join us wandering along mountainous backroads and trails, join this expedition. |
