An ordinary tour
The first reaction of most people when they consider travel is to see a travel agent. If the customer wants to go to Thailand the agent shows them glossy brochures of seaside views, Bangkok temples and the northern mountains near Changmai. Flowery paragraphs describing a virtual paradise are proffered.
What follows are itineraries, ideas, options, and a price that depends on the style you want to travel. If you stay in the expensive hotels this sets the stage for other expensive costs such as food drink and excursions usually by bus to the beach, crocodile farms, elephant camps and temples.
You settle into a routine that gets expensive. Finally when your tour is over you begin to realize that along with the advances on your credit card you've spent a small fortune. Hopefully you found some time for fun.

An expedition
When excursions like ours are conceived arrangements are made that are in the same spirit of an expedition. To organize an expedition there must be some built in difficulty, some activity, one must exert oneself to follow a plan that facilitates adventure, exploration, and learning. Something personal must be gained. You have to perform and achieve a goal to receive a sense of satisfaction. We are for those who want to have an experience unlike an ordinary tour. That's why we like to use the word expedition, well, we like the sound of it too.
The Northern Motor Club has for the last ten years organized excursions of this nature. Our chosen method of travel is the motorcycle. The motorcycle helps to add a dimension of adventure and style. On motorcycle we can ride deeper into the remote Jungle areas. The jeep is our second choice.
We realize that not everyone wants to set a record or do something such as an endurance motorcycle ride the length of the Mekong River. What we do is arrange an expedition that suits the nature and interests of the group. What we strive for is as much adventure as possible. One joins a group of people journeying to a destination for an extraordinary experience. The members of the expedition are to be responsible for themselves.
The ordinary method of touring is arranged to extract as much money as possible from you, how much fun you have for the money spent is questionable. Our methods are of an economical nature. We normally rough it staying in guesthouses or inexpensive hotels. Guesthouses are basic accommodations that cost $3.00 - $6.00 US per night. Expect to sleep as one would at a camp. The bathroom facilities vary in nature and are usually not what one would want; the Asian type toilet takes some getting used to. The further you go into remote areas the more fundamental accommodations get, sometimes only cold water is available for showering. Don't let this concern you too much, even when if choose to sleep in straw huts it's that not bad, remember this is the way it really is in Thailand not glossed over or contrived. We suggest it is worth a little inconvenience to encounter the real lifestyle of everyday people.
We will provide all the information about costs and so forth. We are an alternative to buying a tour. You must be responsible to pay your own way, accommodations, food, transport and share some costs with the group as they occur. Because of the Asian economic problem it is now much cheaper due to the advantageous exchange rate. If you want to come we are helpful and easygoing. The reason we have the club is to enjoy ourselves.
All the cost's for our expeditions are provided for your examination and you pay these cost's as we travel. see: Cost Information Sheet.
We regret that it is not possible to offer too many expeditions. This is because I can't spend all my time in the jungle although it is tempting. What I look for from applicants is an interest in learning for themselves through experience.

ThaiNMC Our Expeditions begin in mid November and continue through March. This is the comfortable time of year.

The only difference between ordeal and adventure is attitude.
