ONLINE CHICHEWA-ENGLISH AND ENGLISH-CHICHEWA   DICTIONARY

Chichewa or Chicheŵa is the language of the Cheŵa tribe belonging to the Bantu linguistic family and one of Malawi's national tongues promoted as the country's lingua franca.

This project serves as my final year Project of the Bachelor of Science Degree
In Information Technology.

AIMS OF THE PROJECT

-To promote interest in the official indigenous
language Chichewa
-Cultural heritage
-To help visitors who are interested to visit Malawi learn the language while
in there home countries.
-To help Malawians living a broad know their mother tongue language.

Almost all Malawians and people living in Zambia, part of Zimbabwe and part of Mozambique
have a need for language reference and learning
materials for the African languages. Yet there is a lack of even basic
language information available to Malawians. Mother-tongue speakers
wishing to learn English also lack decent learning and reference materials.

For
the promotion of a truly multilingual culture among all blacks
The dictionary is the first Internet dictionary created in Malawi. The
dictionary website itself is available in both English and Chichewa
making it the first online Malawian language dictionary.

It contains 10,000 entries

Chichewa is a language of the Bantu language family, spoken in parts of East, Central, and Southern Africa. It is spoken in Malawi where, from 1968 until recently, it has served as the national language. It is also spoken in Mozambique, especially in the provinces of Tete and Niassa, in Zambia (especially in the Eastern Province), as well as in Zimbabwe where, according to some estimates, it ranks as the third most widely used local language, after Shona and Ndebele. The countries of Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique constitute the central location of Chichewa.

Because of the national language policy adopted by the Malawi government, which promoted Chichewa through active educational programs, media usage and, other research activities carried out under the auspices of the Chichewa Board, out of a population of around 9 million, upwards of 65% have functional literacy or active command of this language.
