Arcadayn Journal, Session #6
27 Greening: The party left Theronton and headed east towards the foothills. Around midday, when the farms started to thin out, they started rotating some of the company into a forward scouting party. They reached the first set of ruins a couple of hours before dusk: a collection of earthen mounds and the remains of some square, stone-walled buildings. After checking out the area, they used one of the more intact buildings for a campsite.
28 Greening: The party continued east, finding more ruins. Some of the sites contained surviving carvings of elemental motifs and some local animals (antelope, wolves, eagles, etc.). One site contained a small ziggurat with crude statues of beasts (including an owl, a mole/badger thing, and some kind of winged monster). All of these ruins appeared to be located in a narrow east-west band a few miles wide, with the highest points of each site being nearly in a straight line. In the late afternoon, they reached a ruined tower surrounded by four, low square structures (possibly sunken tombs?). While they rested here, Laylah climbed the tower wall to look eastward. She could see a mountain in the distance that matched the one from her dream. She also saw the lowering sun reflecting off of some sort of upright stone in the valley below that peak, a few hours' journey away. The company made camp a short ways from the tower rather than continue to the stone, which they would not reach before dark.
During the predawn watch, Corben heard something approaching the camp. Fazia was moving to investigate when a crossbow bolt hit each of them--Fazia in the foot (crippling it), Corben right in the circle on his priestly tabard. Fazia immediately went berserk and charged the two snipers. Laylah, Darra and Pelmark were the first to awaken at her bellow. Laylah went to calm the horses while Pelmark rushed to help Corben. Darra ran after Fazia, but kept her distance. When Fazia downed the first one, Darra recognized them as undead like the ones she met in Berigissel, and briefly fainted. The swordswoman soon finished off the two walking dead, and snapped out of her berserk.
Pelmark used healing magic on Corben as Laylah bandaged Fazia's foot. (Fazia refused magical aid.) While the priests studied the two bodies carefully, stripped them of useful gear, and hid them in some nearby bushes, Laylah tried to calm Darra.
29 Greening: Pelmark treated Corben again before the party set out. They were unable to track the two undead very far, but they seemed to have come from the east.
After about 3 hours' travel, the three scouts crossed a hill and saw the ruins with the obelisk. However, they were ambushed by a group of 15 skeletons and zombies. The scouts fled to warn the company, who took a defensive position as Pelmark healed Erik's wound from the ambush. The archers felled some of the undead as the pack closed with them, then slowly destroyed the rest hand-to-hand. Fortunately, none of the company was seriously wounded in the fight.
